Recreate the Cosmos on Your Desktop! Discover the Secrets of Venus’s Phases with a Sphero Mini

Have you ever gazed up at the moon and wondered, “Why does its shape change every single night?” It feels like a deep cosmic mystery, but the truth is, you can recreate that secret right in your own living room. Today, I used a palm-sized robotic ball called Sphero Mini to dive into the wonders of the universe!

Bringing the Galaxy to Your Desktop

In this setup, I cast a white Sphero Mini as the Moon or Venus and used a simple light bulb to play the role of the Sun. The brilliant thing about Sphero Mini is its programming capability, which allows it to trace a perfect circular orbit. Watching it move feels like seeing a celestial body orbiting in deep space, right before your eyes. Check out this video to see its smooth, orbital dance:

The model beautifully replicates how Venus goes through phases and even how its apparent size changes as it moves.

The Many Faces of a Sphere

Setting this up is incredibly simple. First, you program the Sphero to move in a circle. You can find the specific programming steps here:

If you are using block-based programming, it looks something like this:

Place the light bulb in the center, start your programmed Sphero, and kill the lights. Let the bulb illuminate the Sphero Mini as it orbits.

When the lights go out…

Impressive, isn’t it? Depending on its position relative to the light, you can see exactly how half of the Sphero Mini stays illuminated.

Here is the key scientific takeaway: Venus itself isn’t changing shape. It’s the changing relationship between the Sun (the light source), the celestial body (the illuminated object), and us (the observers on Earth) that creates the illusion of changing phases.

Simulating the Phases of Venus

As you continue to observe, you’ll find something fascinating. If you change your perspective, there’s a moment where the Sphero Mini looks almost completely lit up.

It looks fully illuminated—a perfect model for a full Venus!

This mimics the moment when Venus moves to the far side of the Sun from Earth’s perspective, catching the sunlight head-on. Conversely, when we can only see the shadowed side, it represents the New Moon phase.

Now it’s hidden in the shadows.

The phases of celestial bodies can be hard to grasp from a textbook alone, but when you move them with your own hands, that confusion turns into an “Aha!” moment.

The magic of Sphero Mini lies in its programmability, allowing anyone to move it with precision and ease. By turning a simple robotic ball into a celestial body, science becomes an interactive adventure.
