Change Your Perspective, Change the World? The Defining Moment of “Centrifugal Force” Captured by a Spinning Camera
I’m Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment!
Have you ever felt a mysterious force pinning you against the side of a spinning teacup at an amusement park, or felt yourself leaning outward as a car takes a sharp turn? It’s that “whoa!” moment where you instinctively brace yourself. Believe it or not, there is a “ghostly force” in our world that appears simply because the spot where you are standing is rotating.
Recently, I streamed an online lesson on Uniform Circular Motion, a fundamental concept in physics. In that lesson, I used a rotating table to explain the mechanics of circular movement. But today, I’m taking it a step further. I’ve filmed an experimental video to answer the question: “What does the world actually look like from the perspective of someone on a spinning object?”

The Experiment: Catching the “Ghost Force” Known as Centrifugal Force
The star of this experiment is a weight attached to a spring, fixed at the center of a rotating table. By watching whether the spring stretches or stays still, we can visually confirm if a force is at play.
To make things interesting, I focused on the “difference in perspective”:
A camera standing perfectly still outside the table (Stationary Frame).
A camera spinning right along with the table (Rotating Frame).
By recording these two perspectives simultaneously and comparing them side-by-side, we can uncover the true nature of one of physics’ great mysteries: “Centrifugal Force.” After a lot of trial and error, I finally captured the perfect footage. First, take a look at this striking comparison video:
Does Physics Change When Your Perspective Shifts?
Take a look at this photo. This is the view from a camera positioned directly above the rotating table, looking down from a fixed point.

From our outside perspective, the weight simply looks like it’s traveling in a circle. In physics terms, it is constantly being pulled toward the center by a “centripetal force,” which keeps it on its curved path. However, when we switch to the camera spinning with the table, the scene changes entirely.

Incredible, isn’t it? From the perspective of the rotation, the moment the table starts spinning, a “mysterious force pulling outward” acts on the weight, causing the spring to stretch further and further.
Centrifugal Force: Inertia in Disguise
This outward-pulling sensation is what we call Centrifugal Force. In reality, someone watching from the outside cannot see this force. That’s because centrifugal force is a “fictitious force” that only exists for the person doing the spinning.
Its true identity is actually Inertia. Objects have a natural tendency to keep moving in a straight line. When the platform underneath tries to force it into a curve, the weight essentially resists, as if saying, “But I want to go straight!” In a rotating world, that resistance manifests as an outward pull.
The fact that the forces we perceive change depending on where we stand is one of the most fascinating and profound aspects of physics. I hope this video helps the term “Centrifugal Force” jump out of your textbook and turn into something you can truly feel and understand.
