Pour Water and a Cube Appears! The CMY Water Cube That Reveals the Magic of Color Subtraction

I’m Ken Kuwako, your science educator. Every day is an experiment!

Place three colorful transparent sheets inside a clear cube, then gently pour in some water. Suddenly, a tiny cube appears to float in the empty space inside. It looks like magic—but it’s actually a fascinating demonstration of the science of light.

What Is a CMY Cube? Seeing the World Through Subtractive Color

The inspiration for this device comes from an artwork known as the CMY Cube. CMY stands for Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow, the three primary colors used in printing, paints, and inks.

The screens on our TVs, smartphones, and computers create colors by adding together the three primary colors of light: Red, Green, and Blue (RGB). CMY works in the opposite way. Instead of adding light, these colors create images by absorbing—or subtracting—certain wavelengths of light. This contrast between additive and subtractive color is one of the most fascinating concepts in color science.

Why Does a Cube Appear When You Add Water?

Place cyan, magenta, and yellow sheets on three faces of a transparent cube and fill it with water. As if by magic, a smaller cube appears suspended inside.

This happens because the light passing through the three colored sheets overlaps, combining their subtractive effects to create new colors. Cyan and magenta produce blue, magenta and yellow create red, and cyan and yellow create green. Where all three colors overlap in the center, your eyes perceive a distinct little cube floating inside the larger one.

Adding water introduces refraction, bending the light and making the color boundaries even sharper and more vivid. Watching an invisible space suddenly transform into a solid-looking block of color is one of those moments that never gets old.

Now Available as the CMY Water Cube

This idea has been turned into a classroom science product by Narika, a company specializing in science education materials. The result is the CMY Water Cube.

Catalog No. S77-1088: CMY Water Cube

Compared with a handmade version, the commercial model delivers much brighter colors and a far more polished finish. Here’s what it looks like when filled with water.

Make Your Own at Home!

The best part is that you can build your own CMY Water Cube. While it may not match the precision of the commercial version, creating one yourself is a rewarding way to explore the science of light. It’s a fantastic craft project for curious kids and makes an excellent summer science project as well.

Here’s how to make one:

Color science sits at the intersection of art and physics, making it an endlessly fascinating subject. If you have the chance, try pouring in the water yourself and experience the magical moment when the hidden cube suddenly appears.
