Eddy Currents Launch Metal Rings Into the Air — The Electromagnetic Magic of Tsukuba Expo Center

I’m Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment!

What would you think if someone told you that a piece of aluminum foil could float in midair without using fire or any tricks? It sounds like magic, but it’s actually a real phenomenon you can witness with an ordinary induction cooktop (IH) found in many kitchens.

Watch Aluminum Foil Float in Midair!

Here’s a fascinating experiment you can do using an IH induction cooktop.Place a ring made from aluminum foil on top of the cooktop and switch it on… and to your surprise, the foil gently lifts off and floats in the air!

Turn on the power…

The aluminum foil ring gently rises into the air!

Why Does It Float? The Secret of Eddy Currents

There’s no hidden trick in the aluminum foil. The magic happens inside the IH cooktop. A coil beneath the surface rapidly changes its magnetic field, which induces a powerful electric current inside the aluminum foil. This circulating current, called an eddy current, creates its own magnetic field that pushes against the magnetic field produced by the cooktop.

The key principle behind this is electromagnetic induction. Whenever a conductor (a material that carries electricity) is placed in a changing magnetic field, an electric current is generated inside it. Because this current swirls around in loops, it’s known as an eddy current.

The magnetic field created by these eddy currents repels the magnetic field from the IH coil, generating an upward force that lifts the aluminum foil.

It’s the same basic principle as trying to push together the north poles of two magnets—they naturally repel each other.

Interestingly, this is also how an IH cooktop heats your cookware. The eddy currents generated inside the metal pot produce heat. Whether the energy appears as heat or as a lifting force depends on the situation, but the underlying physics is exactly the same.

Scale It Up, and It Launches Like a Rocket!

A much larger version of this demonstration can be seen at the Tsukuba Expo Center. Instead of a lightweight aluminum foil ring, a heavy metal ring is placed on the device. The instant the power is switched on, it shoots upward like a rocket.

Take a look at the video below.

Watching such a heavy metal ring blast into the air in an instant is truly impressive. The gentle “float” of the aluminum foil experiment becomes a dramatic launch when scaled up.

The laws of physics don’t change just because something gets bigger. In fact, increasing the scale often makes the underlying forces even easier to see—and that’s one of the most exciting things about physics.
