Solaris: The Sci-Fi Classic That Shatters Everything We Know About Life and Science
I’m Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment!
Hello everyone! Do you enjoy reading? Specifically, don’t you find it exciting when a science fiction novel takes you to an inexplicable world where our everyday logic and physical laws simply don’t apply? From my reading list this year, I’d like to introduce a book that was particularly fascinating. It’s the timeless classic, Solaris, by the Polish author Stanisław Lem.

Imagine this: What if there was a colossal planet in the cosmos—a planet that behaves like a living being—where all of humanity’s knowledge and science are utterly useless?
The Challenge of Planet Solaris: A Mysterious Organism
Since its discovery, Solaris has baffled scientists. Its most defining characteristic is that the entire planet, especially its vast “ocean,” behaves like one single, massive organism.
The ocean of Solaris responds to the beings and probes that approach it, dynamically changing its shape. Sometimes it creates enormous structures, and at other times it weaves complex, never-before-seen patterns. Humans attempted to make contact with Solaris, conducting repeated experiments such as applying radiation, but the ocean never exhibited the same response pattern twice. Since it constantly shows a different “face,” humanity has ultimately been left completely in the dark about “what Solaris is thinking” or “what is truly going on.”
To study these enigmatic phenomena, an entire field of research called “Solaristics” was born. Yet, even after over a century of investigation, scientists have been unable to grasp the essence of Solaris. Many theories have been proposed, but none have been conclusive.
The reality that our familiar laws of physics and concepts of life simply do not apply here pushes the limits of human knowledge.
The Mystery of the “Visitors” Created by Solaris
Into this enigmatic setting, the protagonist finally descends upon the research station. And this is where the story takes an even more mysterious turn.
One day, after the protagonist settles into life at the base, the impossible happens: a woman he knew, who is supposed to be dead, appears right before his eyes. What’s more, her appearance and memories are exactly those of the woman he knew. However, she herself has no idea why she is there.
The protagonist panics and attempts to escape from her, but she cannot stray beyond a certain distance. Even when he forcibly separates from her on a rocket, she invariably returns to the base a few days later.
Who exactly is this “Visitor”? Why did Solaris create the image of this particular woman?
This phenomenon sparks an even deeper mystery: Is the ocean of Solaris reacting to the “memories” and “deep-seated psychological impulses” of the humans present, and somehow creating physical entities from them? Through the interaction between the protagonist and this woman, the narrative delves into profound themes, including human memory, love, and the limits of science.
Questioning the Limits of Science and Human “Hubris”
Reading this novel makes you feel as though the hubris we often carry regarding science and research—the belief that “we can solve everything eventually”—is brilliantly shattered.
It demonstrates that no matter how advanced our technology or extensive our research, there are entities that remain incomprehensible and utterly uncontactable to the human race. Solaris might possess a time flow, consciousness, and form of life that is radically different from ours.
Lem, the author, was a Polish writer who endured tremendous experiences during World War II. This historical context of pressure from various nations may have fueled his critical perspective on human arrogance and the theme of the “absolute impossibility of understanding.”
You might find some sections a bit dense, but in that case, feel free to skip ahead to follow the main plot. The mystery and philosophical questions at the heart of the story are guaranteed to capture your mind. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend stepping into this profound world of science fiction.
