The More, the Smoother! Proving the Uniform Electric Field in a Capacitor Through Simulation
I’m Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment.
When you hear the word “capacitor,” what comes to mind?
Most people vaguely know that it’s a component that stores electricity. But far fewer have ever seen what’s actually happening inside one. This time, I used a simulation tool called GeoGebra to visualize the hidden “landscape of electric potential” that exists within a capacitor. Once you can see it, the elegant structure of electricity becomes much clearer than any equation alone could show.
What Happens to Electric Potential Between a Positive and Negative Charge?
A capacitor consists of two plates facing each other: one positive and one negative.
But what shape does the electric potential—the electrical equivalent of height—take between them?
Let’s start with the simplest case: a single positive point charge facing a single negative point charge.

Notice that the slope of the combined electric potential is not a straight line—it forms a smooth curve. Like a gentle path connecting a mountain peak to a valley floor, the potential changes gradually across space.
What If We Add More Charges?
With just one positive and one negative charge, we get a curved potential profile.
So what happens if we line up many charges instead?
First, let’s place ten positive charges in a vertical row at x = −1.

Next, we’ll place ten negative charges in a matching row at x = 1.

When we combine the two distributions, the result looks like this:

In this example, we’ve arranged ten charges on each side.
Now let’s view the potential profile from the side.

The change is striking.
The curved slope has become much closer to a straight line. As more charges are added, their individual bumps and dips begin canceling one another out, producing a smoother and more uniform gradient overall.
Try It Yourself!
This simulation uses ten charges on each side, but what happens if you keep increasing the number?
Experiment with the simulator below and see for yourself how the electric potential changes as more charges are added.
As the number of charges grows, the potential gradient approaches an almost perfectly straight line.
And that is exactly what’s happening between the plates of a capacitor.
Why a Uniform Electric Field Appears
Physics textbooks often state that “a uniform electric field exists between the plates of a capacitor.”
Many students memorize this fact without ever seeing why it’s true.
But with this simulation, the reason becomes visible.
When a huge number of charges are arranged in an orderly pattern, the slope of the electric potential becomes nearly constant everywhere. A constant potential gradient means a uniform electric field.
What begins as a curved profile created by a single charge transforms into a straight line when countless charges work together.
Even in the world of electricity, there is strength in numbers.
