Reveal the True Nature of Sound! Experience the Magic of Wave Science and Visualization with GeoGebra
I’m Ken Kuwako, your science trainer. Every day is an experiment!
Our world is buzzing with “waves,” from the sounds we hear to the light we see. But in our daily lives, it’s surprisingly hard to actually see the “vibrating air” that makes up these waves. Have you ever thought, “I learned about this in science class, but I just can’t picture it”? Today, I want to introduce a magical digital tool that solves that problem in an instant.
Visualizing the Invisible! The Amazing Power of GeoGebra
The tool I’m talking about uses “GeoGebra,” a software for creating math and physics graphs that is loved by educators worldwide. It’s particularly brilliant at helping students intuitively understand things like “string vibrations” or “air column vibrations” (like the air inside a flute)—topics that many middle and high schoolers often struggle with.

Vibrating String Simulation: Standing Waves
This fantastic simulator was created by Tom Walsh, a high school physics teacher in the United States. Since it was designed by a teacher in the classroom, it perfectly hits all the points where students usually say, “That’s exactly what I wanted to see!”
The Fascinating Link Between Longitudinal and Transverse Waves
The best part of this tool is how it lets you switch between “longitudinal waves” (the actual physical movement) and their “transverse wave” representation (the wavy line graphs).
Sound is a longitudinal wave, meaning it travels through air by creating areas where molecules are packed together (compression) and areas where they are spread out (rarefaction). However, because textbooks usually draw these as wavy lines, many students get confused.
By playing with the parameters in this simulation, you can see exactly how the air vibrates and where it becomes most dense. Isn’t it exciting to feel like you’re actually “seeing” sound?
Ready for Class Tomorrow! Incredible Customization
This tool also supports more advanced learning.

By using the menu at the bottom of the screen, you can freely adjust settings such as:
How “standing waves” are formed
“Fixed ends” (where the end of the air column is closed)
“Free ends” (where the end of the air column is open)
For example, if you’ve ever wondered, “How exactly does the air vibrate inside a flute?” you can simulate the answer instantly.
Hands-on Science on Your Tablet
One of the great things about GeoGebra is that it runs right in your browser—no installation required. You can send the link to your students’ tablets, and they can learn through trial and error, adjusting parameters to see how the wave shapes change. Instead of just memorizing facts, they can “interact and understand.” I highly recommend experiencing this kind of deep learning for yourself!
Inquiries and Requests
Let’s bring the wonder and fun of science closer to home! I’ve put together various fun experiments you can try at home and tips on how to make them work. Feel free to explore!
