The Coin That Won’t Come Out—Solved in a Split Second with Physics! The Coin Escape Puzzle

I’m Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment!

“I might never see that coin again…” I recently encountered a mysterious puzzle that left me feeling that exact sense of desperation. At first glance, it looks like a simple enough contraption, but it actually hides a fundamental principle of physics in plain sight. I’d like to invite you into the world of the “Coin Escape Game”—a challenge that combines the wonder of a magic trick with the ultimate “Aha!” moment of science.

Discovering the Mysterious Coin Escape Game

Back in August 2018, while I was in Aomori for a lecture, a fellow teacher gifted me this fascinating toy called the Coin Escape Puzzle (Coin Escape Puzzle). Even as an adult, I found myself shouting “Whoa!” because it’s just that clever. Here is what it looks like:

The transparent case is packed with tiny metal bearings. There is a slot at the bottom, and when you push a coin in with your finger, the balls smoothly slide to the left and right, allowing the coin to enter easily.

If Shaking Fails, Why Not Try Spinning?

However, once the coin is inside, the real trouble starts! The tiny bearings completely block the exit. No matter how much you turn it upside down or shake it frantically, that coin won’t budge an inch.

You might find yourself wondering, “Do I need a magnet?” or “Is there a hidden switch?” But the truth is, you can get it out effortlessly without using any tools at all. Check out this video to see the surprising solution in action!

What did you think? The answer was simply to give the case a high-speed spin!

Centrifugal Force is the Magic Key! Finding Science in Daily Life

Why does spinning the case make the coin come out? This is where physics gets exciting. When you spin the case, a centrifugal force acts on the tiny bearings inside. Centrifugal force is the outward energy that pushes a rotating object away from its center. Thanks to this force, the bearings are pushed to both sides simultaneously, creating a clear “pathway” for the coin in the center.

Our natural instinct is to shake the case up and down to get the coin out. That movement relies on inertia—the property where objects at rest stay at rest, and objects in motion stay in motion. In this specific puzzle, however, the centrifugal force generated by rotation is much more effective at clearing the way.

You can find this same force working hard in your everyday life:

Washing machine spin cycles (flinging water outward to dry clothes)

Salad spinners (whisking water off your lettuce)

Instead of using “brute force” by shaking, we solve the problem with “logical motion.” Once you understand the concepts of physics, even the smallest everyday mysteries become a lot more fun to explore!
