Why Does a Stretched Balloon Get Hot!? A Mind-Blowing Home Temperature Experiment Using Thermography
I’m science trainer Ken Kuwako. Every day is an experiment.
Stretch a balloon, and it heats up. Let it snap back, and suddenly it feels cold. It sounds like a simple little trick, but this tiny experiment is actually tied directly to some of the deepest ideas in physics. Today, let’s uncover the fascinating connection between heat and energy with an experiment you can try right now at home.
Try Stretching a Balloon
Here’s a super easy experiment. Grab a balloon, press it lightly against your face, and then pull the balloon quickly while keeping it touching your skin.
Did you notice anything? Did the balloon feel warm? Now keep the balloon stretched for a moment, let it return to its original shape, and touch it to your face again. This time, it feels cool. Take a look at this thermal camera video showing the effect in action.
The Thermal Camera Makes It Obvious
Seen through a thermal camera, the temperature change is impossible to miss.

When stretched, the balloon’s surface temperature rises to about 40°C (104°F). But when the stretched rubber snaps back:

the temperature drops to around 27°C (80.6°F), about 1°C cooler than the room temperature of roughly 28°C. Pretty amazing that a single balloon can swing in temperature so dramatically, isn’t it?
For these measurements, I used the thermal camera below. It’s compact, easy to use, and surprisingly handy.

Why Does It Get Hot — and Then Cold?
There’s a real scientific reason behind this strange effect. When you stretch the balloon’s rubber, the mechanical energy you apply is converted into heat energy. It’s similar to how the valve area of a bicycle tire gets warm after pumping in air — a process related to what physicists call adiabatic compression.
But when the stretched rubber suddenly contracts, the opposite happens. The rubber absorbs heat from its surroundings as it snaps back.
This is similar to adiabatic expansion, which causes the temperature to drop. In fact, this same principle is deeply connected to how refrigerators and air conditioners work. Inside those machines, a refrigerant repeatedly compresses and expands to move heat from one place to another.
It’s pretty incredible to think that a simple balloon experiment on your kitchen table relies on the exact same physics as modern cooling technology.
The Strange Nature of Rubber: Heat Makes It Shrink!?
Here’s another surprising twist. Rubber behaves completely differently from most metals and liquids.
Most materials expand when heated. Rubber, however, tends to contract when it gets warmer. Why? Because the long molecular chains inside rubber curl up more tightly as temperature increases. Physicists call this phenomenon “entropic elasticity.”
For such an everyday material, rubber hides a remarkably deep world of physics inside it.
Give this experiment a try for yourself. With just one balloon, you can become a scientist today.
