Feel It, Learn It! Free GeoGebra Simulation to Experience Wavelength, Period & Wave Speed
Hi, I’m Ken Kuwako, Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment.
Waves are kind of magical when you think about it. Drop a stone in a pond and ripples spread outward. Sound reaches your ears as a wave. The video you’re watching on your phone right now? That’s riding in on radio waves. Yet the moment words like “wavelength,” “frequency,” and “wave speed” come up, a lot of people’s eyes glaze over. Today I want to introduce an ICT teaching tool that makes these concepts surprisingly intuitive.
Learn by Touching: A Wave Simulation Tool
What I’m sharing today is a wave simulation published on GeoGebra — a free math and science tool used by educators around the world. The first time I saw it, I was immediately drawn in, thinking, “What on earth is this thing?” I highly recommend playing with it yourself.

Measure Wavelength, Speed, and Period with Your Own Hands
The simulation includes an on-screen ruler. Use it to measure the distance from one wave crest to the next (or trough to trough) — that’s the wavelength, and you’re measuring it yourself.

Hit the play button and the wave starts moving, with elapsed time displayed on screen. Place an arrow marker anywhere you like, and you can watch and measure how long it takes for the wave to return to the same phase — that’s the period, read directly off the timer by you.

“Wavelength × frequency (the inverse of period) = wave speed” — this formula is in every physics textbook. But with this tool, you can verify that relationship with your own eyes and hands. The real power here isn’t memorizing the formula; it’s actually feeling it.
Why Animation Makes the Difference
Waves have two defining characteristics: their shape at any given moment (spatial structure) and the way they move over time (temporal change).
The problem with textbook diagrams is that they’re frozen. Trying to picture a wave “traveling” from a still image is genuinely hard. This animated simulation lets you experience both dimensions at once — how the wave looks in space and how it evolves through time. That’s something text and static diagrams simply can’t deliver. In fact, wave simulations like this are everyday tools for researchers in acoustics, seismology, and optics. Getting a feel for this kind of visualization early on is a genuine head start for anyone going further in science or physics.
What Is GeoGebra?
GeoGebra is a free platform where teachers and researchers from around the world create and share educational materials — from geometry and function graphs to physics simulations like this one. This particular tool was made by Chris Hamper, designed so that learners can explore the three key properties of waves (wavelength, speed, and frequency) visually and interactively. Try moving the sliders and arrow markers around and see what you discover. Chances are, at some point the textbook definitions will click into place as something real.
