Shadows Reveal Physics Secrets! The Surprising Link Between Uniform Circular Motion and Simple Harmonic Motion

I’m Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment.

Have you ever been mesmerized by shadows dancing on a wall, moving with a rhythm that makes them seem almost alive? In the world of physics, shadows are far more than just dark shapes—they are powerful tools that reveal hidden truths. Today, we’re going to use the power of shadows to uncover the surprising connection between two seemingly different motions: spinning and swinging.

The Mysterious Shadow Connecting Circles and Oscillations

In high school physics, many students hit a metaphorical wall when they encounter “Simple Harmonic Motion” (SHM). This is that distinct, rhythmic bouncing of a weight hanging from a spring.

Actually, this complex-looking motion becomes crystal clear when you view it as a side-on version of “Uniform Circular Motion.” Physics uses a symbol called “ω” (angular velocity) to describe the speed of rotation, but trying to visualize how that links to a bouncing spring in your head can be a real headache.

Inspired by the clever “Shadow Pitagora” segments from the popular Japanese show Pitagoraswitch, I set up an experiment: project a light onto a spinning ball and observe its shadow. Take a look at this video first, and watch for the incredible synchronicity created by the shadows.

Behind the Scenes: The Setup

I put this experiment together using a few simple items found around the science lab.

Two springs, a 100g weight, a light bulb, a stand, a constant-speed rotating platform, a red ball, and some tape to hold the ball in place.

When “Spinning” and “Bouncing” Become One

The key to this experiment is placing the “spinning ball” right next to the “bouncing weight” and casting their shadows onto a screen at the same time.

From above, the ball is simply traveling in a perfect circle.

But look at what happens on the screen when we light it from the side…

It’s amazing, isn’t it? The shadow of the circular motion and the shadow of the bouncing spring move up and down in perfect harmony, as if they were connected by an invisible thread.

This is the heart of the physics: Simple Harmonic Motion is just Circular Motion viewed from the side. Once you see this connection, that “ω” in the formulas isn’t just a letter anymore—it’s the “heartbeat of the rotation” controlling the shadow’s dance.

Experience the Science Lab Magic Digitally!

In my classes, I love the “live” experience. Seeing these shadows align right in front of their eyes leaves a lasting impression on students. To make this “aha!” moment accessible to everyone, I’ve created a simulator using the programming tool Scratch. You can try it out yourself below. See for yourself how a circular path transforms into a rhythmic shadow.

Physics is the art of finding the unseen laws that govern our world. I hope that by looking through the lens of a “shadow,” you’ve caught a glimpse of the beauty that connects seemingly unrelated phenomena.
