Say Goodbye to Picnic Frustrations! The Physics of Tiny Gaps That Keeps Your Mat Grounded
I’m Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment!
Hello, everyone! Have you ever had that “oh no!” moment during a picnic or a sports day? You spread out your leisure sheet, and a sudden gust of wind catches it, flipping the corners and sending sand right onto your lunch. It’s a classic outdoor struggle, but did you know there is a brilliant way to solve this using the power of science?
Today, I’m going to put on my science teacher hat and break down the secret behind a viral life hack shared by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department: The Rubber Band Trick to keep your picnic mat grounded!

I tested a method to make leisure sheets less likely to blow away in the wind. Simply tie the four corners with rubber bands (about 6cm in). Then, tuck the tied parts and the edges of the sheet underneath before laying it down. It stayed put even in a light breeze! This is perfect for places where you can’t use pegs to secure the mat, so give it a try.
The Invisible Battle Between Wind and Plastic
First, let’s look at why these sheets fly away so easily. Take a look at this video:
The edges of a leisure sheet are incredibly light, so even a tiny breeze can make them flutter. That small gap where the edge lifts up is the “point of no return.” Once wind gets underneath, it creates an angle that turns the air into a force pushing directly upward. To make matters even worse, once the sheet starts to lift, air vortices (swirls of air) form behind it. These vortices make the sheet flap violently and unpredictably.
Master the Corners, Master the Wind: The Magic of Rubber Bands
This is where the Police Department’s hack comes in: tying the four corners with rubber bands. It looks simple, but there is a surprisingly logical scientific principle at play. I tried it out myself!

By tightly bunching the corners with rubber bands, you are concentrating the material. This makes the most vulnerable parts of the sheet—the corners—locally heavier. In science terms, you are increasing the density to create greater inertia. These weighted corners want to stay on the ground due to gravity, effectively blocking that “initial lift” caused by the wind. It’s like placing invisible little weights on every corner!
Fluid Dynamics: Closing the Gap
The second key step is tucking the edges inward to keep the sheet flush with the ground.

By folding the edges under, you minimize the gap between the sheet and the ground, effectively shutting the door on the wind. Think of it like a racing car designed to hug the track by eliminating the space underneath. Without a gap, the wind can’t crawl under the sheet. Instead, the air flowing over the top can actually create a downward force, pressing the mat even more firmly against the earth.
Science Makes the Outdoors Even Better
Even if you don’t have heavy stones or tent pegs, just four rubber bands can turn the wind into your ally. This is the beauty of science hiding in our daily lives!
Concentrated Gravity: Making the corners heavy with rubber bands.
Air Blockade: Tucking edges to eliminate the gap.
This powerful combination will protect your perfect picnic. Next time you head outdoors, make sure to tuck a few rubber bands into your bag!
