Can You Capture Spring with Science? A Stylish Pressed-Flower Experience Controlling Plant Moisture (Plum & Cherry Blossoms)
Hi, I’m Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. To me, every day is a new experiment!
With the arrival of spring, plum and cherry blossoms are in full, vibrant bloom. Don’t you think it would be wonderful to capture that fleeting beauty and keep it with you forever? From a scientific perspective, making pressed flowers is actually a very creative experiment in controlling a plant’s moisture. Today, I’d like to share how we brought a little bit of “stylish science” into our daily lives by pressing some beautiful spring blooms.
Capturing Spring! Pressing Plum and Cherry Blossoms
I decided to try my hand at pressing plum and cherry blossoms. I placed them on paper towels and tucked them away between the pages of a heavy book for five days. By applying pressure, you draw the moisture out of the plant cells and dry them out. I was truly moved by the result—it’s like time has stood short, leaving behind perfectly preserved, stunning flowers.

The finished product is incredibly chic and looks amazing, doesn’t it?

If you want to make the process even easier, this flower pressing kit is a great choice. I also used this dried flower bookmark set to display the finished blossoms. I found both of these on Amazon. It’s great to see so many tools available online these days that make it easy for beginners to jump right in.
The Science and Secrets of Pressing Flowers
The process is quite simple. First, pick your favorite flowers and carefully arrange them on the specialized paper included in the kit. Then, stack some heavy books on top to press them down. Wait about five days, and you’re done!
While you can substitute everyday items like paper towels for the kit, I noticed that the specialized paper is specifically engineered for high absorbency. This seems to result in better color retention and a cleaner finish. The “scientific secret” to keeping the colors vivid is to remove the moisture as quickly as possible before the plant begins to wither and turn brown.

Creating Your Own Original Bookmarks
Once the flowers are completely dry, place them inside one of the design sheets from the bookmark set. By sealing them away from the air, you can preserve their beauty for a much longer time.
Simply slide your flower into the sheet, and just like that, you have a one-of-a-kind, handmade bookmark.

By the way, those green leaves you see in the photo aren’t actually from a plum tree. They were added by the creative members of the Science Club who thought, “A touch of green would make the whole composition pop!” It was a wonderful artistic touch.

By applying just a little bit of scientific knowledge, nature’s beauty can be transformed into stunning art. Why not try pressing some flowers yourself and turn your spring memories into “scientific specimens”?
They really turned out beautifully!
