Why Don’t Planes Fall Out of the Sky? The Secret Family Tree of Flight, Found at the Aviation Science Museum

I’m Ken Kuwako, Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment.

Why Doesn’t a Giant Hunk of Metal Fall Out of the Sky?

A plane carrying hundreds of people lifts gently into the air. When you stop and think about it, it’s a pretty mind-boggling sight. I wanted to experience the whole “how flying works” thing up close, so I took my kid to the Museum of Aeronautical Sciences, right next to Narita Airport.

Look, Touch, Learn: So Much to Explore

The museum is packed with exhibits on everything from the history of aviation to how jet engines work. Plenty of them are hands-on, so kids and grown-ups alike get totally absorbed.

A jet engine sucks in air, squeezes it tightly, mixes it with fuel, burns it, and blasts it out the back to push itself forward. Remember how a balloon zips away in the opposite direction when you let go of the opening? It’s the same idea of action and reaction, just on a gigantic scale.

There was also a class on folding paper airplanes (the glider type). A paper airplane is actually a proper glider: its wings catch lift from the air, and it glides forward as it slowly descends. Change the folds or the balance point even a little, and the way it flies changes completely. As a science teacher, I learned a lot from this one.

The 4th-Floor Cafeteria: Best Seat in the House!

On the 4th floor there’s a cafeteria with a view of real takeoffs and landings at Narita Airport. A plane takes off about every ten minutes, and with a bit of luck you can catch a landing too. On our visit, we saw exactly one plane touch down.

It felt like a mini trip abroad, and we had a great time. My kid said this was the best part of the whole day. The food itself is nothing special, about what you’d expect from a department store food court. But the view in front of you is so good that an ordinary meal feels like a treat.

Reading the “Family Tree” of Aircraft

Last, I want to tell you about an exhibit that sorts aircraft like a family tree of living things. Lined up this way, the differences between each type become wonderfully clear. I thought it was a really clever way to categorize them.

The first question the tree asks is: “Is it heavier or lighter than air?”

Heavier than air with no engine? That’s a glider. Heavier than air with an engine? A helicopter or an airplane. Lighter than air with no engine? A balloon. Lighter than air with an engine? An airship.

The lighter-than-air ones float thanks to buoyancy from the surrounding air, the same principle that keeps a ship afloat on water. In other words, we’ve been sorting vehicles into two groups: those that float in an “ocean of air,” and those that fly by generating force with wings or rotors. Next time you spot a plane near an airport, try asking yourself, “Which family does this one belong to?” The everyday view might just look a little different.
