Kun k\u00e4\u00e4miin johdetaan virta, magneetin voima saa k\u00e4\u00e4min py\u00f6rim\u00e4\u00e4n. N\u00e4in moottori toimii. Kun taas k\u00e4\u00e4mi\u00e4 py\u00f6ritet\u00e4\u00e4n magneetin l\u00e4hell\u00e4, k\u00e4\u00e4miin syntyy virta. Ilmi\u00f6t\u00e4 kutsutaan s\u00e4hk\u00f6magneettiseksi induktioksi, ja se on generaattorin toimintaperiaate.
