Cleanser Is a Team-Up of Surfactants and Abrasives

Burnt-on gunk and dull, stubborn stains that laugh in the face of both acidic and alkaline cleaners. When that happens, there’s a trusty bottle waiting in the back of your kitchen cabinet: scouring cleanser. Inside that tube or bottle, it turns out, there’s a whole crowd of “tiny files” too small to see. Let’s take a peek at how cleanser gets dirt off.

Amazon: Scouring Cleanser

What’s Inside Cleanser? Tiny Files

Cleanser contains abrasives: extremely fine, hard particles. Calcium carbonate is a common one. When you scrub, those countless little grains act like a swarm of tiny files. Regular detergents dissolve or peel dirt away, but cleanser’s specialty is physically scraping it off.

By the way, toothpaste contains abrasives too, to scrub stains off your teeth. Same idea, just showing up in a different part of your daily life!

What Kind of Dirt Does It Work On?

Cleanser shines on hard, cemented-on messes like heavily burnt-on grease or light rust on metal. When detergent alone can’t budge a stain, cleanser’s basic strategy is to wear it down bit by bit.

Dirt that acids or alkalis can dissolve is best left to those cleaners. Cleanser is for the tough customers that “chemistry power” alone can’t handle.

A Two-Step Combo: “Scrape” and “Wrap”

Many liquid cleansers contain surfactants as well as abrasives, and when the two work together, cleaning gets even more efficient.

The abrasives scrape the dirt off the surface and break it into pieces.

The surfactants wrap around those loosened bits and help them mix into the water.

This “scrape and wrap” tag team is how cleanser can clear away grime that ordinary detergents can’t touch.

It’s Not Just the Dirt That Gets Scraped

Here’s the catch: because cleanser scrapes away dirt, it also scrapes the surface you’re cleaning, just a tiny bit. Plastic, shiny stainless steel, and painted surfaces can pick up fine scratches and lose their shine. That’s why it’s a good idea to test it on a hidden spot first.

How visible the scratches are depends on the size of the abrasive particles and how hard you rub. The harder you scrub, the better it cleans, but the more easily it scratches. The golden rule is to go gently and a little at a time.

Melamine Sponges Are Part of the Scraping Club Too

Melamine sponges also remove dirt by scraping it off, just like cleanser.
