Ever wonder what a bug is looking for when it dives headfirst into a flower? I managed to catch insects tucked inside both a dandelion and an azalea. In spring meadows and backyards, tiny creatures always seem to know exactly where they’re going, and that’s both mysterious and fun to think about.<\/p>\n

Flowers That Call to Bugs: Insect-Pollinated Plants<\/h3>\n

Flowers that rely on insects to carry their pollen from one bloom to another are called insect-pollinated flowers. To get the job done, they offer insects a reward: sweet nectar and protein-rich pollen. Insects visit for a meal, and the pollen that sticks to their bodies gets carried to the next flower, which is how pollination happens. It’s a win-win deal between flower and bug.<\/p>\n

The Azalea’s Landing Strip: Nectar Guides<\/h3>\n

Look closely at an azalea and you may spot a pattern of dark spots on the inside of its petals. These markings are called nectar guides.<\/p>\n

Nectar guides are thought to work like signposts, pointing insects toward the nectar. As a bug follows the pattern deeper into the flower, its body brushes against the stamens and pistil, and pollen gets passed along naturally. The bug I saw inside the azalea may well have been following these markings, which makes it a pretty cool moment to have caught on camera.<\/p>\n

Flowers Look Different Through a Bug’s Eyes<\/h3>\n

Here’s where it gets even more interesting: insects and humans see color very differently. Honeybees, for example, can detect ultraviolet light that we can’t see, but they have trouble telling red apart from other colors. That means a flower that looks like a single flat color to us may have a dark center or a bold pattern when seen through a bee’s eyes. In other words, flowers design their signals for insects, not for us.<\/p>\n

The Dandelion Is Actually a Whole Crowd of Flowers<\/h3>\n

The dandelion has its own surprising secret. What looks like one yellow flower is really made up of more than a hundred tiny flowers packed together. Each “petal” you see is actually a complete little flower of its own. By banding together into one big, eye-catching bloom, they’re easier for faraway insects to spot. And when a bug lands on top, it can drop off and pick up pollen from lots of tiny flowers all at once.<\/p>\n

There’s another twist. Native Japanese dandelions, like the Kanto dandelion, depend on insects to carry their pollen. But many of the common dandelions that arrived from overseas can make seeds without being pollinated at all. Same flower, totally different strategies for passing on their genes. Pretty fascinating!<\/p>\n

Try Observing Flowers Near You<\/h3>\n

You can watch insects crawl into azalea flowers in gardens and parks. Pay attention to the patterns inside the blooms, and compare which bugs visit which flowers. You might make some brand-new discoveries. One safety note: some plants in the azalea family are poisonous, so don’t sip the nectar or put the flowers in your mouth. Look, but don’t taste!<\/p>\n
