Discover the Magic of Light with a Squid Eye Experiment

Ken Kuwako here, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment.

What if I told you there’s an animal that focuses like a camera, sliding its lens back and forth? Hard to believe, right? But that’s exactly what a squid does. Humans focus by changing the thickness of the lens in our eyes. Squid, on the other hand, physically move the lens itself back and forth to get things sharp. It’s just like a camera lens! It amazes me how many different ways nature has come up with to solve the same problem: seeing.

Recreate a squid’s eye with everyday items!

I wanted to find a fun way to show how a squid’s eye works, and Y, a fellow science teacher, came up with a great model experiment. Best of all, you can do it with things you probably already have around. It’s easy to pull off in class, so if you’re a teacher prepping a science lesson, give it a try!

What you’ll need

– A round-bottom flask (clear, with a narrow neck)
– Water (enough to fill the flask)
– A plastic bag (stands in for the retina)
– A rubber band (to hold the plastic in place)
– A magnifying glass (one with a handle is ideal)
– A piece of paper with a small picture or some text on it (the thing you’ll project)

How to do it

1. Fill the round-bottom flask with water.
This flask is your “eyeball.”

2. Attach the plastic to the side of the flask. This is where your “retina” will be.

3. At just the right distance, a crisp image will appear on the plastic.
And here’s the cool part: the image is upside down! It’s a great way to see how light actually travels.

The secret of the upside-down image

The moment that flipped image pops into sharp focus on the plastic, your students will definitely go “Whoa!” Here’s the twist: the image on the retina in your own eyes is flipped too, both upside down and left to right. Your brain automatically turns it the right way up, which is why you never notice.

This experiment gives students a real feel for both the mystery of the squid’s eye and the nature of light. Concepts like “what a lens does” and “how images form” can be tough to get across with theory alone, but when students experience them hands-on, understanding really sinks in.

Wait, is this model a little off? Squid eyes and human eyes: similar, yet different

Squid and humans are only distant relatives on the evolutionary tree. Even so, both of our eyes work like a camera: a lens gathers light and focuses an image onto the retina at the back. They’re strikingly alike. When unrelated creatures take different paths and end up with similar designs, it’s called convergent evolution.

The details, though, are quite different. In the human retina, the light-sensing cells sit at the back, so there’s a blind spot where the nerve exits the eye. In the squid’s retina, the light-sensing cells face forward, so squid are said to have no blind spot. Same idea of an “eye,” but with a very different build.

Let’s think a little further

If you have time, here are some follow-up questions to try:

– Draw a diagram comparing how human eyes and squid eyes focus.
– Why does the image appear upside down? Explain it using the refraction of light.
– Why did eyes evolve in such a wide variety of forms?

Touching on the diversity of how eyes have evolved can open the door to deeper, inquiry-based learning.

I hope you’ll add this easy model experiment to your teaching toolbox. After all, science is always more fun when you actually try it yourself, right?

Inquiries and requests

Making science fun and familiar!
