The secret lies in something called the \u201cgyroscopic effect.\u201d The gyroscopic effect is the fascinating and rather mysterious property of a rotating object that makes it want to keep its axis of rotation pointing in the same direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, I\u2019ve wondered if there was an easy, homemade way to recreate and experience this fascinating phenomenon\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That thought had been sitting in the back of my mind for several years. Then, just the other day, I finally found the answer in the most unexpected place! It happened at Eiji Komori\u2019s training course for science experiment instructors. What he showed us looked, at first glance, like nothing more than an ordinary \u201cpaper cup rocket.\u201d Here\u2019s how to make one.<\/p>\n<h3>What you\u2019ll need<\/h3>\n<p>Two paper cups, a pair of wire cutters, scissors, and one rubber band.<\/p>\n<h3>Making the launch pad<\/h3>\n<p>First, make some cuts in the bottom of one of the paper cups. Place the rocket on the launch pad and push it down from above. When you place the rocket on the launch pad, push it down firmly while giving it a slight twist\u2014about 45 degrees. That\u2019s all it takes to completely transform the way the rocket flies.<\/p>\n<p>The moment it launches, the rocket begins spinning beautifully like a screw. It flies smoothly and steadily along a straight trajectory, almost as if it had a perfectly straight spine, going \u201cWhoooooosh!\u201d through the air!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23991\" src=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/db42e005d719499728a27a19f39305ce.png\" alt=\"Rocket flying steadily after adding a twist\" width=\"482\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/db42e005d719499728a27a19f39305ce.png 258w, https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/db42e005d719499728a27a19f39305ce-230x300.png 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Just adding a twist gives it remarkably stable flight!<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly the homemade version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E5%A7%BF%E5%8B%A2%E5%88%B6%E5%BE%A1\">gyroscopic effect<\/a> I had been looking for! Who would have thought that such a simple craft project could hide the same principle of attitude control used in spacecraft?<\/p>\n<p>The reason a rugby ball flies straight when thrown with a beautiful spiral, and the reason bullets from a rifle can travel straight over long distances after being spun by the gun\u2019s spiral grooves, is also the gyroscopic effect.<\/p>\n<p>Everyday science activities are gateways to a much bigger world\u2014a world connected to advanced physical laws studied at university and even to cutting-edge space technology. That\u2019s what makes playing with science so much fun!<\/p>\n<h3>My favorite ultimate gyroscopic toy: \u201cGyro Dora\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>I love toys that let you actually feel the gyroscopic effect. I have several old-fashioned gyroscopic tops, but my number-one recommendation is this Doraemon-shaped toy called \u201cGyro Dora.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">I\u2019ve kept buying replacements with my own money so I can demonstrate it in class, and I\u2019m now on my third one. It\u2019s a little pricey, but it\u2019s absolutely worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What makes Gyro Dora so impressive is its size and power. Inside is a large spinning top\u2014a gyroscope.
