N\u00e4ist\u00e4 ensimm\u00e4inen on melko helppo ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4\u00e4, sill\u00e4 siin\u00e4 rakennuksesta tehd\u00e4\u00e4n mahdollisimman luja, jotta se kest\u00e4\u00e4 j\u00e4ristyksen. T\u00e4rke\u00e4 idea on sijoittaa rakennuksen ja maan v\u00e4liin erityinen kerros, jota kutsutaan eristysrakenteeksi. Siin\u00e4 voidaan k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 esimerkiksi kumia, laminoitua kumia ja liukulaakereita. Niiden ansiosta maan voimakkaat liikkeet eiv\u00e4t siirry suoraan rakennukseen.<\/p>\n<p>Kun rakennus ja maa \u201dirrotetaan\u201d toisistaan, rakennuksen ei tarvitse ottaa vastaan koko maanj\u00e4ristyksen energiaa. Vaikka \u201dmaa\u201d eli suuri vaunu liikkuu rajusti, sen p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 oleva pieni vaunu vaimentaa liikett\u00e4 py\u00f6riens\u00e4 avulla.
