El muelle comienza a bajar los escalones lentamente, uno tras otro, como si fuera una criatura con voluntad propia. Justo cuando parece que ha ca\u00eddo un escal\u00f3n, solo la parte final se estira suavemente hasta el siguiente, y el resto del muelle la sigue, como si todo el conjunto fuera atra\u00eddo hacia delante\u2026 Detr\u00e1s de este movimiento tan extra\u00f1o se esconde, en realidad, una buena dosis de <b>leyes de la f\u00edsica<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h3>El secreto de este movimiento de oruga est\u00e1 en el desplazamiento del centro de gravedad<\/h3>\n<p>Si observamos detenidamente el movimiento del muelle, nos damos cuenta de que todo su cuerpo no cae de una sola vez. Primero, <b>la parte trasera, que queda arriba, se comprime mientras es atra\u00edda hacia delante<\/b>. Despu\u00e9s, <b>todo el muelle cae hasta el siguiente escal\u00f3n<\/b>. Las orugas y los gusanos medidores, por ejemplo, avanzan contrayendo la parte trasera de su cuerpo, estirando la parte delantera y despu\u00e9s acercando de nuevo la parte trasera, \u00bfverdad? En el caso del muelle ocurre algo parecido: una parte de la espiral se comprime y desplaza el centro de gravedad hacia delante, es decir, hacia abajo. Como consecuencia, el resto del muelle es arrastrado hacia esa direcci\u00f3n y avanza.<\/p>\n<p>Resulta fascinante pensar que tanto el movimiento de un ser vivo al caminar como el de una simple espiral de pl\u00e1stico pueden estar basados en mecanismos f\u00edsicos similares.<\/p>\n<h3>Sigamos el recorrido de la energ\u00eda<\/h3>\n<p>Si analizamos el movimiento del muelle desde el punto de vista de la f\u00edsica, podemos observar una serie de transformaciones de energ\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>Al principio, cuando el muelle se encuentra en lo alto de la escalera, posee <b>energ\u00eda potencial gravitatoria<\/b>. Cuanto m\u00e1s alto est\u00e1 un objeto, mayor es su energ\u00eda potencial gravitatoria.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando el muelle comienza a caer, algunas partes de la espiral se comprimen y se estiran. En ese momento, una parte de la energ\u00eda potencial gravitatoria se transforma en <b>energ\u00eda potencial el\u00e1stica<\/b>, es decir, energ\u00eda almacenada gracias a la elasticidad del muelle. Es el mismo principio por el que una goma o un muelle estirado tienden a recuperar su forma original.<\/p>\n<p>Despu\u00e9s, cuando la parte comprimida del muelle intenta recuperar su forma, la energ\u00eda el\u00e1stica que hab\u00eda quedado almacenada se libera r\u00e1pidamente y se transforma en <b>energ\u00eda cin\u00e9tica<\/b>. Esa es precisamente la raz\u00f3n por la que una parte del muelle parece salir disparada hacia el siguiente escal\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>En otras palabras, mientras baja por la escalera, el muelle va repitiendo una especie de carrera de relevos energ\u00e9tica:<\/p>\n<p>energ\u00eda potencial gravitatoria \u2192 energ\u00eda potencial el\u00e1stica \u2192 energ\u00eda cin\u00e9tica \u2192 (en el siguiente escal\u00f3n) energ\u00eda potencial gravitatoria\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Este ciclo se repite una y otra vez. Y precisamente porque ocurre en cada escal\u00f3n, el movimiento del muelle adquiere ese curioso aspecto de criatura viva que avanza paso a paso.<\/p>\n<h3>La f\u00edsica del Slinky que incluso lleg\u00f3 a ser famosa en el espacio<\/h3>\n<p>Como curiosidad, este juguete llamado Slinky tambi\u00e9n ha llamado la atenci\u00f3n en el mundo de la f\u00edsica en numerosas ocasiones. Existe un famoso experimento en el que se sostiene un Slinky verticalmente por su extremo inferior y se suelta el extremo superior para dejarlo caer libremente.<\/p>\n<p>A primera vista, podr\u00edamos pensar que, en cuanto soltamos la parte superior, todo el muelle comenzar\u00e1 a caer al mismo tiempo. Sin embargo, sucede algo sorprendente: <b>el extremo inferior permanece quieto durante un tiempo<\/b>, mientras la parte superior se comprime y desciende hasta alcanzarlo.<\/p>\n<p>Esto ocurre porque la fuerza generada por la compresi\u00f3n de la parte superior del muelle todav\u00eda no se ha transmitido por completo a la parte inferior.
