It was one of the things that sparked my curiosity about science when I was a child. I grew up near the Lifelong Learning Center, a science museum in Gunma Prefecture, and I loved playing with the plasma ball and devices that generated static electricity, such as the Pascal electric wire, which were permanently installed there.

Why does the light seem to be drawn toward my finger? Why is it safe to touch? Those simple childhood questions may have helped lead me to where I am today. Whenever I see a plasma ball, the excitement and wonder I felt back then come rushing back.

Does Your Fingertip Become a Lightning Rod?

One of the most fascinating things about a plasma ball is the way the glowing streams seem to follow your finger like a friendly little pet when you hold your hand near the glass. And yes, you can touch it without feeling any pain.

There’s some clever science hiding behind this seemingly magical effect.

Inside the glass sphere is a special state of matter called plasma. Plasma is often described as the “fourth state of matter,” following solids, liquids, and gases. It forms when a gas receives enough energy for its atoms and molecules to become ionized. In fact, the stars shining in the night sky and the magnificent auroras we see near the poles are also phenomena produced by plasma.

Inside a plasma ball, a high-frequency voltage is applied to the central electrode. This causes electricity to continually flow through the plasma, producing those beautiful glowing streams of light.

But why does the light gather around your finger when you bring it close?

The key is that electricity tends to follow paths where it can flow more easily. Our bodies are relatively good conductors of electricity. When you touch the glass sphere, the electrical field is affected by your body, creating an easier path for the electrical discharge. The glowing plasma stream therefore becomes concentrated near your finger.

The electricity can then couple capacitively through your body to the surroundings and ultimately to the ground.

What’s fascinating is that, in a very loose sense, your fingertip is playing a role similar to a lightning rod. A lightning rod provides an easier path for electrical discharge, helping direct a lightning strike toward the ground. In a tiny, much gentler version, something similar is happening inside this little glass sphere. Isn’t it amazing to think that the same basic idea of electricity seeking an easier path can connect a plasma ball to something as powerful as lightning?

For a more technical explanation, you can also check out this link: About plasma balls

Everyday Science! From Your Smartphone to Outer Space

The plasma ball is mesmerizing enough just to watch, but the same idea of how electricity flows and responds to its surroundings is also used in technology right around us.

A great example is the capacitive touchscreen on your smartphone. When you touch the screen with your finger, the electrical properties at that particular spot change slightly. The phone detects this change and uses it to determine exactly where you touched the screen.

Isn’t it fascinating that a plasma ball and your smartphone can be connected through the same basic scientific principles?

Why not experience this fascinating science for yourself at home? Plasma balls are surprisingly affordable, with some available for around 1,000 yen. I actually bought one myself and brought it into my classroom. My students were amazed when they saw the glowing streams for the first time—their eyes lit up with excitement.

Curiosity begins with a simple question: “Why?” And that question can be the perfect doorway to learning.

Here is the plasma ball I purchased on Amazon.

amazon　Plasma Ball

Rakuten　Plasma Light Thunder Ball

A tiny universe glowing inside a glass sphere.
