Cada d\u00eda es un experimento.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ante nosotros se alza un enorme acantilado de varias decenas de metros de altura, cubierto por un sinf\u00edn de franjas marrones que recuerdan al dorado perfecto de un bizcocho reci\u00e9n horneado. En la isla de Izu \u014cshima existe una gigantesca formaci\u00f3n geol\u00f3gica conocida popularmente como &#8220;Baumkuchen&#8221;, igual que el famoso pastel alem\u00e1n. En este art\u00edculo descubriremos por qu\u00e9 recibe ese curioso nombre y conoceremos la fascinante historia geol\u00f3gica que dio origen a estas impresionantes capas.<\/p>\n<h3>El gigantesco &#8220;Baumkuchen&#8221; que encontr\u00e9 en Izu \u014cshima<\/h3>\n<p>Uno de los lugares que m\u00e1s quer\u00eda visitar durante mi viaje a Izu \u014cshima era este famoso <b>corte geol\u00f3gico<\/b>. Yo tambi\u00e9n lo pens\u00e9 al principio, pero <strong>la realidad es que no se trata de un plegamiento<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lo que ocurri\u00f3 fue algo muy distinto. El terreno original ya ten\u00eda colinas y depresiones cuando las sucesivas erupciones volc\u00e1nicas comenzaron a cubrirlo con materiales expulsados por el volc\u00e1n. Este corte geol\u00f3gico fue descubierto por casualidad en 1953, cuando se excav\u00f3 la monta\u00f1a para construir la carretera que rodea la isla. Gracias a aquellas obras, una parte de la historia de la Tierra que llevaba miles de a\u00f1os oculta bajo el suelo qued\u00f3 finalmente al descubierto.<\/p>\n<h3>La sorprendente historia oculta tras la gran capa negra<\/h3>\n<p>Entre todas las capas destaca especialmente una gruesa franja negra de escoria volc\u00e1nica situada aproximadamente en el centro de la fotograf\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-65924 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-07-30-4.51.12.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-07-30-4.51.12.jpeg 1252w, https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-07-30-4.51.12-300x276.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-07-30-4.51.12-1024x941.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-07-30-4.51.12-768x705.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Si observamos con atenci\u00f3n, veremos que las capas situadas por debajo presentan un aspecto muy desordenado, completamente distinto al resto.<\/p>\n<p>En aquella \u00e9poca, el volc\u00e1n de Izu \u014cshima a\u00fan permanec\u00eda bajo el mar. Justo cuando estaba comenzando a emerger sobre la superficie, el magma entr\u00f3 en contacto directo con el agua marina, provocando una serie de erupciones especialmente explosivas. Los materiales expulsados durante ese momento hist\u00f3rico son precisamente los que forman esta ca\u00f3tica capa negra.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando el agua del mar interviene en una erupci\u00f3n, el enorme calor del magma convierte instant\u00e1neamente el agua en vapor, produciendo explosiones extremadamente violentas. Como consecuencia, los fragmentos volc\u00e1nicos salen despedidos en todas direcciones y se depositan de forma irregular, en lugar de formar capas ordenadas.<\/p>\n<p>En otras palabras, esta \u00fanica franja negra conserva el instante exacto en que Izu \u014cshima dej\u00f3 de ser un volc\u00e1n submarino para convertirse en una isla que comenzaba a asomar sobre el oc\u00e9ano.<\/p>\n<h3>C\u00f3mo se form\u00f3 el &#8220;Baumkuchen&#8221;: un ciclo de tres pasos<\/h3>\n<p>\u00bfC\u00f3mo se origin\u00f3 entonces este precioso patr\u00f3n de franjas? Estas acumulaciones forman las franjas oscuras del corte geol\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2461 Durante los periodos de calma, la superficie se altera por la lluvia y el viento, mientras el polvo se acumula formando suelo.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>En los largos intervalos sin erupciones, la lluvia, el viento y el paso del tiempo erosionan lentamente la superficie. Adem\u00e1s, diminutas part\u00edculas de polvo arrastradas por el aire se van depositando poco a poco, creando una fina capa de suelo. Esa es la responsable de las franjas m\u00e1s claras.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2462 Llega una nueva gran erupci\u00f3n y vuelve a cubrir todo con materiales volc\u00e1nicos.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Cuando el volc\u00e1n despierta de nuevo, otra capa de escoria y ceniza se deposita sobre el suelo ya formado, comenzando un nuevo ciclo.<\/p>\n<p>Cada conjunto formado por una capa volc\u00e1nica y otra de suelo se va apilando igual que las sucesivas capas de un aut\u00e9ntico Baumkuchen. As\u00ed es como naci\u00f3 este impresionante dibujo de franjas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siempre hab\u00eda asociado los estratos geol\u00f3gicos al fondo del mar, as\u00ed que me sorprendi\u00f3 descubrir que en tierra firme tambi\u00e9n pueden formarse capas tan espectaculares y perfectamente definidas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>El grosor y el color de cada estrato cambian seg\u00fan la intensidad de cada erupci\u00f3n y el tiempo que transcurri\u00f3 hasta la siguiente. Si fu\u00e9ramos contando una a una todas esas capas, casi como quien cuenta los anillos de un \u00e1rbol, podr\u00edamos reconstruir el ritmo con el que el volc\u00e1n ha entrado en erupci\u00f3n durante miles de a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Resulta incre\u00edble pensar que un simple corte realizado para construir una carretera permita leer nada menos que 18.000 a\u00f1os de historia volc\u00e1nica.
