Miksi lima on v\u00e4lill\u00e4 kimmoisaa <b>geeli\u00e4<\/b> ja v\u00e4lill\u00e4 t\u00e4ysin juoksevaa <b>nestett\u00e4<\/b>?<\/p>\n<p>Pyykkiliiman p\u00e4\u00e4ainesosa on <b>PVA (polyvinyylialkoholi)<\/b>, joka koostuu eritt\u00e4in pitkist\u00e4 ketjumaisista molekyyleist\u00e4. Kun n\u00e4m\u00e4 ketjut kelluvat vedess\u00e4 ilman yhteyksi\u00e4 toisiinsa, ne liikkuvat vapaasti. T\u00e4ll\u00f6in aine k\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyy nesteen\u00e4.<\/p>\n<p>Kun mukaan lis\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n <b>booraksista (natriumboraatista)<\/b> per\u00e4isin olevia boraatti-ioneja, tilanne muuttuu. Boraatti-ionit muodostavat siltoja PVA-ketjujen v\u00e4lille. Voit kuvitella tilanteen kuin neulonnan, jossa lankoja sidotaan yhteen solmuilla. Molekyyliketjut liittyv\u00e4t toisiinsa monesta kohdasta ja muodostavat kolmiulotteisen verkkorakenteen. T\u00e4m\u00e4n ansiosta molekyylit eiv\u00e4t en\u00e4\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4se liikkumaan vapaasti, vaan muodostavat kimmoisan geelin \u2013 eli liman.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00e4st\u00e4 alkaa kokeen mielenkiintoisin osa. N\u00e4iden molekyylisiltojen vahvuus riippuu nimitt\u00e4in <b>liuoksen pH-arvosta<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Happamassa ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4 boraatti-ionit sitovat itseens\u00e4 vetyioneja ja muuttuvat boorihapoksi. T\u00e4ll\u00f6in niiden kyky yhdist\u00e4\u00e4 PVA-ketjuja heikkenee. Siltoja alkaa katketa yksi toisensa j\u00e4lkeen, verkkorakenne purkautuu ja lima muuttuu j\u00e4lleen juoksevaksi <b>nesteeksi<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Em\u00e4ksisess\u00e4 ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4 tapahtuu p\u00e4invastainen ilmi\u00f6. Vetyionit irtoavat, jolloin muodostuu j\u00e4lleen tehokkaasti siltoja rakentavia boraatti-ioneja. Ne yhdist\u00e4v\u00e4t PVA-ketjut uudelleen, verkkorakenne rakentuu takaisin ja kimmoisa <b>geeli<\/b> syntyy uudelleen.<\/p>\n<p>Toisin sanoen sitruunahappo tekee liuoksesta happaman, jolloin molekyylisillat hajoavat ja lima muuttuu nesteeksi. Natriumkarbonaatti puolestaan tekee liuoksesta em\u00e4ksisen, jolloin sillat muodostuvat uudelleen ja lima palautuu geelim\u00e4iseksi. Jokaisen pH-muutoksen taustalla tapahtuu n\u00e4kym\u00e4t\u00f6n rakennus- ja purkuty\u00f6 molekyylien maailmassa.<\/p>\n<p>Ja mist\u00e4 tiesimme kaiken t\u00e4m\u00e4n tapahtuvan?
