Pero \u00bfqu\u00e9 era exactamente lo que produc\u00eda esa acidez? Quien intent\u00f3 responder a esa pregunta fue el qu\u00edmico franc\u00e9s <b>Antoine Lavoisier<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Lavoisier, considerado uno de los padres de la qu\u00edmica moderna y famoso por explicar el proceso de la combusti\u00f3n, estudi\u00f3 numerosas sustancias \u00e1cidas, entre ellas el \u00e1cido sulf\u00farico. A partir de sus observaciones lleg\u00f3 a una conclusi\u00f3n: el elemento responsable de la acidez deb\u00eda de ser el ox\u00edgeno.<\/p>\n<p>Bas\u00e1ndose en esa idea, bautiz\u00f3 este elemento con el nombre de &#8220;ox\u00edgeno&#8221;. De hecho, la palabra inglesa &#8220;oxygen&#8221; tambi\u00e9n procede del griego y significa &#8220;generador de \u00e1cidos&#8221;, reflejando exactamente la hip\u00f3tesis de Lavoisier.<\/p>\n<h3>El verdadero responsable de la acidez era el hidr\u00f3geno<\/h3>\n<p>Con el paso del tiempo, nuevos descubrimientos demostraron que aquella teor\u00eda no era correcta. El \u00e1cido sulf\u00farico no es \u00e1cido gracias al ox\u00edgeno, sino debido a los <b>iones de hidr\u00f3geno<\/b> que contiene.<\/p>\n<p>Hoy sabemos que una sustancia es \u00e1cida cuando puede liberar muchos iones hidr\u00f3geno (H+). En otras palabras, Lavoisier se\u00f1al\u00f3 al sospechoso equivocado: crey\u00f3 que el culpable era el ox\u00edgeno, cuando el verdadero responsable era el hidr\u00f3geno. Es como una novela de misterio en la que el primer sospechoso resulta ser inocente y el verdadero culpable aparece al final.<\/p>\n<p>Eso, sin embargo, no disminuye en absoluto el enorme m\u00e9rito de Lavoisier. A finales del siglo XVIII todav\u00eda no exist\u00edan conceptos como &#8220;elemento qu\u00edmico&#8221; o &#8220;i\u00f3n&#8221; tal y como los entendemos hoy. Con los conocimientos y herramientas disponibles en su \u00e9poca, su esfuerzo por explicar de forma l\u00f3gica el comportamiento de las sustancias impuls\u00f3 enormemente el desarrollo de la qu\u00edmica moderna.<\/p>\n<h3>Un nombre equivocado&#8230; que tiene toda una historia detr\u00e1s<\/h3>\n<p>En la ciencia existen muchos nombres que conservan las ideas \u2014o incluso los errores\u2014 de la \u00e9poca en que fueron creados. Un ejemplo muy conocido es el sentido convencional de la corriente el\u00e9ctrica, definido en direcci\u00f3n opuesta al movimiento real de los electrones. La raz\u00f3n es puramente hist\u00f3rica: la direcci\u00f3n de la corriente se estableci\u00f3 mucho antes de que se descubrieran los electrones.<\/p>\n<p>A primera vista, estas diferencias entre el nombre y la realidad pueden parecer simplemente algo m\u00e1s que memorizar. Sin embargo, cuando conoces la historia que hay detr\u00e1s, todo cobra sentido y resulta mucho m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil recordarlo.
