Esimerkiksi vedess\u00e4 (H\u2082O) k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n kahta oranssia helme\u00e4 ja yht\u00e4 vihre\u00e4\u00e4 helme\u00e4. Jos metalli rakennettaisiin samanlaisena helmiyhdistelm\u00e4n\u00e4 kuin molekyyli, siit\u00e4 voisi synty\u00e4 v\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 mielikuva metallisidoksesta. Metallithan eiv\u00e4t muodostu yksitt\u00e4isist\u00e4 molekyyleist\u00e4, vaan valtavista m\u00e4\u00e4rist\u00e4 s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6lliseen hilaan j\u00e4rjest\u00e4ytyneit\u00e4 atomeja.<\/p>\n<p>Kaasumolekyylien kohdalla tilanne on kuitenkin aivan toinen. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 tavalla n\u00e4kym\u00e4tt\u00f6m\u00e4t molekyylit muuttuvat k\u00e4sin kosketeltaviksi v\u00e4rikk\u00e4iksi malleiksi, jotka on helppo rakentaa itse. Rakenteet hahmottuvat paljon intuitiivisemmin kuin pelkist\u00e4 kaavoista. Ja mik\u00e4 parasta \u2013 lopputulos n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 todella s\u00f6p\u00f6lt\u00e4. Jos vetymolekyylej\u00e4 ei ole riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti, atomien m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 ei en\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4sm\u00e4\u00e4 reaktioyht\u00e4l\u00f6n vasemmalla ja oikealla puolella. Sen sijaan ett\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4 j\u00e4isi vain teoriaksi paperilla, oppilas huomaa sen omin k\u00e4sin rakentaessaan ja purkaessaan molekyylej\u00e4.<\/p>\n<p>Kemiallinen reaktioyht\u00e4l\u00f6 ei ole vain kokoelma symboleja. Se kuvaa sit\u00e4, miten atomit liittyv\u00e4t toisiinsa ja irtoavat toisistaan. Kun t\u00e4t\u00e4 prosessia voi kokeilla helmien avulla aivan kuin ratkaisisi palapeli\u00e4, mikroskooppinen maailma muuttuu yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n helposti ymm\u00e4rrett\u00e4v\u00e4ksi.
