Era fascinante ver c\u00f3mo un l\u00edquido completamente transparente se volv\u00eda blanco, casi como si fuera leche, en cuesti\u00f3n de segundos. \u00a1Parec\u00eda magia!<\/p>\n<p>Pero, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 basta con hacer pasar di\u00f3xido de carbono para que ocurra este cambio? Hay un protagonista oculto que hace que todo cambie.<\/p>\n<h3>El verdadero culpable: una diminuta &#8220;piedra&#8221; que casi no se disuelve<\/h3>\n<p>El agua de cal es una disoluci\u00f3n alcalina de un compuesto llamado <b>hidr\u00f3xido de calcio<\/b>. Su caracter\u00edstica m\u00e1s importante es que <b>pr\u00e1cticamente no se disuelve en agua<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Imagina que dentro del agua transparente aparecen millones de diminutos granitos de piedra, tan peque\u00f1os que no puedes distinguirlos individualmente. Aqu\u00ed est\u00e1 una de las partes m\u00e1s interesantes de la qu\u00edmica.<\/p>\n<p>Al mezclar hidr\u00f3xido de calcio con \u00e1cido clorh\u00eddrico tambi\u00e9n ocurre una reacci\u00f3n de neutralizaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div class=\"math-block\" style=\"text-align: center;\" data-math=\"Ca(OH)_2 + 2HCl \\longrightarrow CaCl_2 + 2H_2O\">\\[Ca(OH)_2 + 2HCl \\longrightarrow CaCl_2 + 2H_2O\\]<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>En este caso se forma <b>cloruro de calcio<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>La diferencia es que, a diferencia del carbonato de calcio, <b>el cloruro de calcio se disuelve muy bien en agua<\/b>. Al permanecer completamente disuelto en forma de iones, el l\u00edquido contin\u00faa siendo transparente.<\/p>\n<h3>La condici\u00f3n indispensable para que un l\u00edquido se vuelva blanco<\/h3>\n<p>En otras palabras, para que una reacci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica produzca una apariencia blanca y turbia, el producto formado debe ser <b>insoluble en agua<\/b>, es decir, debe precipitar.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Di\u00f3xido de carbono + agua de cal:<\/b> se forma carbonato de calcio, que no se disuelve \u2192 <b>\u00a1el l\u00edquido se vuelve blanco!<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u00c1cido clorh\u00eddrico + agua de cal:<\/b> se forma cloruro de calcio, que se disuelve perfectamente \u2192 <b>\u00a1el l\u00edquido permanece transparente!<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Precisamente por eso el agua de cal es un excelente &#8220;detective&#8221; del di\u00f3xido de carbono: permite identificar su presencia de un simple vistazo.<\/p>\n<p>Por cierto, el cloruro de calcio que no produce turbidez tiene muchos usos cotidianos.
