Experimentos todos los d\u00edas.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Las unidades que se utilizan para expresar la cantidad de radiaci\u00f3n, el \u201cbecquerel\u201d y el \u201csievert\u201d. Aunque muchas personas han escuchado estos nombres alguna vez, probablemente no sean tantas las que puedan explicar con precisi\u00f3n la diferencia entre ambos. En el Tsukuba Expo Center de la prefectura de Ibaraki encontr\u00e9 un panel explicativo que lo mostraba de una manera muy sencilla. Me hizo pensar inmediatamente: \u201c\u00a1Ahora lo entiendo!\u201d. Aunque un boxeador lance muchos golpes, si todos ellos chocaran contra una pared de cristal, el da\u00f1o recibido por el cuerpo ser\u00eda cero, \u00bfverdad?<\/p>\n<p><b>El sievert (Sv) representa \u201cla cantidad de da\u00f1o que recibe el cuerpo\u201d.<\/b> Cuando la radiaci\u00f3n realmente alcanza el cuerpo humano, el efecto depende de la zona afectada y del tipo de radiaci\u00f3n. Es igual que en el boxeo: un golpe en la cabeza y un golpe en el brazo no provocan el mismo da\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 necesitamos dos unidades diferentes?<\/h3>\n<p>La raz\u00f3n por la que es importante distinguir estas dos unidades es que \u201cemitir mucha radiaci\u00f3n (tener un valor alto en becquerel)\u201d y \u201cser peligroso para el cuerpo (tener un valor alto en sievert)\u201d no siempre significan lo mismo.<\/p>\n<p>Por ejemplo, los pl\u00e1tanos contienen potasio-40, una sustancia radiactiva natural, y aunque su valor en becquerel es peque\u00f1o, emiten cierta radiaci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, la cantidad de sievert que recibe nuestro cuerpo es extremadamente baja y pr\u00e1cticamente no tiene efectos sobre la salud. En cambio, en una radiograf\u00eda m\u00e9dica, aunque la cantidad de radiaci\u00f3n sea relativamente peque\u00f1a, es necesario controlar con precisi\u00f3n su efecto sobre el cuerpo (sievert).<\/p>\n<p>El efecto de la radiaci\u00f3n sobre el cuerpo cambia mucho seg\u00fan el tipo de radiaci\u00f3n. Las diferencias en la \u201ccapacidad de causar da\u00f1o\u201d de los rayos alfa, beta, gamma y los neutrones tambi\u00e9n se tienen en cuenta en el c\u00e1lculo del sievert. Es exactamente la misma idea que en el boxeo: un golpe directo, un gancho o un uppercut pueden causar da\u00f1os diferentes.<\/p>\n<h3>El origen de los nombres de estas unidades cient\u00edficas<\/h3>\n<p>Por cierto, el becquerel recibe su nombre del f\u00edsico franc\u00e9s Henri Becquerel (1852-1908). En 1896 descubri\u00f3 que el uranio emit\u00eda radiaci\u00f3n de forma natural, sentando las bases del estudio de la radiactividad. El sievert debe su nombre al f\u00edsico m\u00e9dico sueco Rolf Sievert (1896-1966), quien investig\u00f3 c\u00f3mo medir los efectos de la radiaci\u00f3n sobre el cuerpo humano. Las unidades cient\u00edficas llevan grabados los nombres y descubrimientos de los grandes investigadores del pasado.<\/p>\n<p>Una simple comparaci\u00f3n con el boxeo permite comprender f\u00e1cilmente unas unidades de radiaci\u00f3n que al principio parecen complicadas.
