Se kertoo, kuinka monta kertaa radioaktiivinen aine vapauttaa s\u00e4teily\u00e4 yhden sekunnin aikana. Vaikka iskuja tulisi valtava m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4, jos kaikki osuvat lasisein\u00e4\u00e4n eiv\u00e4tk\u00e4 ihmiseen, kehoon kohdistuva vahinko olisi nolla.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sievert (Sv) tarkoittaa &#8220;kehon saaman vahingon m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4&#8221;<\/b>. Kun s\u00e4teily osuu oikeasti ihmiseen, sen vaikutus riippuu esimerkiksi siit\u00e4, mihin kohtaan kehoa se osuu ja millaista s\u00e4teily\u00e4 se on. T\u00e4m\u00e4 on aivan sama asia kuin nyrkkeilyss\u00e4: isku p\u00e4\u00e4h\u00e4n ja isku k\u00e4sivarteen eiv\u00e4t aiheuta samanlaista vahinkoa.<\/p>\n<h3>Miksi tarvitsemme kaksi eri yksikk\u00f6\u00e4?<\/h3>\n<p>N\u00e4iden kahden asian erottaminen on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4, koska &#8220;paljon s\u00e4teily\u00e4 tuottava asia (korkea becquerel-arvo)&#8221; ja &#8220;keholle vaarallinen asia (korkea sievert-arvo)&#8221; eiv\u00e4t ole aina sama asia.<\/p>\n<p>Esimerkiksi banaanit sis\u00e4lt\u00e4v\u00e4t luonnollista radioaktiivista ainetta, kalium-40:t\u00e4, ja ne l\u00e4hett\u00e4v\u00e4t hieman s\u00e4teily\u00e4. Niiden becquerel-arvo on kuitenkin pieni ja kehon saama sievert-m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 on eritt\u00e4in v\u00e4h\u00e4inen, joten vaikutus terveyteen on k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 olematon. Toisaalta l\u00e4\u00e4ketieteellisiss\u00e4 r\u00f6ntgentutkimuksissa s\u00e4teilym\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 voi olla suhteellisen pieni, mutta kehoon kohdistuva vaikutus eli sievert-arvo t\u00e4ytyy silti hallita tarkasti.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e4teilyn eri lajit vaikuttavat kehoon eri tavoin. Alfa-, beeta- ja gammas\u00e4teily sek\u00e4 neutronis\u00e4teily eroavat toisistaan siin\u00e4, kuinka suuren vahingon ne voivat aiheuttaa. N\u00e4m\u00e4 erot eli &#8220;vahinkotehokkuus&#8221; otetaan huomioon sievertin laskennassa. T\u00e4m\u00e4 on sama ajatus kuin nyrkkeilyss\u00e4: suora, koukku ja yl\u00e4koukku voivat aiheuttaa erilaisen vahingon.<\/p>\n<h3>Tieteellisten yksik\u00f6iden nimien taustalla olevat ihmiset<\/h3>\n<p>Muuten, becquerel on saanut nimens\u00e4 ranskalaisen fyysikon Henri Becquerelin (1852\u20131908) mukaan. H\u00e4n havaitsi vuonna 1896, ett\u00e4 uraani l\u00e4hett\u00e4\u00e4 luonnostaan s\u00e4teily\u00e4, ja h\u00e4nen tutkimuksensa loivat perustan radioaktiivisuuden tutkimukselle. Sievert puolestaan on nimetty ruotsalaisen l\u00e4\u00e4ketieteellisen fyysikon Rolf Sievertin (1896\u20131966) mukaan. H\u00e4n tutki s\u00e4teilyn vaikutuksia ihmiskehoon ja kehitti menetelmi\u00e4 niiden mittaamiseen. Tieteelliset yksik\u00f6t kantavat mukanaan menneiden tutkijoiden l\u00f6yt\u00f6j\u00e4 ja nimi\u00e4.<\/p>\n<p>Yksi yksinkertainen nyrkkeilyvertauksen kaltainen esimerkki voi tehd\u00e4 vaikealta tuntuvan s\u00e4teilyfysiikan k\u00e4sitteen helposti ymm\u00e4rrett\u00e4v\u00e4ksi.
