Every day is an experiment.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The units \u201cbecquerel\u201d and \u201csievert\u201d are used to describe radiation levels. Many people have heard these names before, but surprisingly few can clearly explain the difference between them. At the Tsukuba Expo Center in Ibaraki Prefecture, I found an exhibition poster that explained this concept in a wonderfully simple way. Even if a boxer throws many punches, if every punch hits a glass wall, the damage to the body would be zero.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sievert (Sv) represents \u201cthe amount of damage the body receives.\u201d<\/b> When radiation actually reaches the human body, its effects depend on where it hits and what type of radiation it is. Just like a punch to the head and a punch to the arm can cause completely different levels of damage.<\/p>\n<h3>Why Do We Need Two Different Units?<\/h3>\n<p>The reason it is important to distinguish between these two units is that \u201cproducing a lot of radiation (a high becquerel value)\u201d does not always mean \u201cbeing dangerous to the human body (a high sievert value).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, bananas contain a naturally occurring radioactive substance called potassium-40. They release radiation and have a small becquerel value, but the sievert value received by the body is extremely tiny, with almost no effect on health. On the other hand, medical X-ray examinations involve relatively small amounts of radiation, but the effects on the body (sieverts) must be carefully managed.<\/p>\n<p>Different types of radiation have different effects on the body. Differences in their \u201cdamage efficiency,\u201d such as those of alpha rays, beta rays, gamma rays, and neutron radiation, are included in the calculation of sieverts. It is exactly like boxing: the damage changes depending on whether the punch is a straight, hook, or uppercut.<\/p>\n<h3>The Story Behind the Names of Scientific Units<\/h3>\n<p>By the way, the unit becquerel comes from the name of the French physicist Henri Becquerel (1852\u20131908). In 1896, he discovered that uranium naturally emits radiation, laying the foundation for radiation research. The unit sievert is named after Swedish medical physicist Rolf Sievert (1896\u20131966), who studied how radiation affects the human body and worked on measuring those effects quantitatively. Scientific units carry the names and discoveries of the people who advanced our understanding of the world.<\/p>\n<p>A single boxing analogy can make the complicated world of radiation units suddenly easy to understand.
