A spiral, or helix, is a three-dimensional curve created by combining circular motion with a constant upward movement. When this motion is projected onto a plane from directly above, it becomes a circle. When projected from the side, it becomes a sine wave.

In physics and mathematics, it is common to analyze three-dimensional motion by projecting it into two dimensions. Electromagnetic waves, such as light and radio waves, are a good example. As they travel through space, their electric and magnetic fields oscillate at right angles to each other. When represented in a cross-sectional view, these oscillations are often drawn as sine waves. Spirals, waves, and circles may seem unrelated, but they are actually different faces of the same underlying motion.

Explore It Yourself with GeoGebra

Visualizing three-dimensional shapes purely in your mind can be challenging. To make it easier, I created an interactive model here. Rotate the spiral freely and see for yourself how the same object can appear as a circle from one angle and a sine wave from another.

As you slowly change the viewing direction, you’ll see the circle smoothly transform into a wave, and the wave gradually become a circle again. Experiencing how a single object can appear to change shape is a powerful step toward understanding three-dimensional space. A simple playground structure becomes a lesson connecting circular motion, sine waves, and cycloids. Sometimes, the doorway to science is hiding in the most familiar places.

Contact & Collaboration

Making science fun, surprising, and accessible for everyone!
