Empez\u00f3 a girar con una fuerza y una velocidad mucho mayores de las que imaginaba, hasta el punto de dejarme sin palabras. Hoy exploraremos la sorprendente relaci\u00f3n entre el calor y el movimiento que se esconde dentro de este peque\u00f1o motor.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00bfQu\u00e9 es exactamente un motor Stirling?<\/h3>\n<p>Un motor Stirling es una m\u00e1quina que aprovecha la expansi\u00f3n y contracci\u00f3n del aire encerrado en un cilindro o tubo de vidrio. Al calentarse y enfriarse alternativamente, el aire cambia de volumen y mueve pistones y desplazadores (componentes que trasladan el aire dentro del sistema), transformando ese movimiento en rotaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Fue inventado en 1816 por el cl\u00e9rigo e inventor escoc\u00e9s Robert Stirling.<\/p>\n<p>Su caracter\u00edstica m\u00e1s importante es que se trata de un <b>motor de combusti\u00f3n externa<\/b>. A diferencia de un motor de gasolina, no funciona mediante explosiones de combustible dentro de la m\u00e1quina. En lugar de eso, recibe calor desde el exterior. Cuando uno de los extremos se calienta con la l\u00e1mpara de alcohol, el aire de esa zona aumenta su temperatura y se expande, empujando el pist\u00f3n. Mientras tanto, el otro extremo permanece m\u00e1s fr\u00edo gracias al contacto con el aire exterior, por lo que all\u00ed el aire se contrae.<\/p>\n<p>La repetici\u00f3n continua de estas expansiones y contracciones hace que el pist\u00f3n avance y retroceda. A trav\u00e9s del mecanismo de biela y manivela, este movimiento alternativo se transforma en el giro del volante de inercia.<\/p>\n<p>En otras palabras, <b>la energ\u00eda t\u00e9rmica se est\u00e1 transformando en energ\u00eda mec\u00e1nica<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Lo verdaderamente importante es que la fuente de energ\u00eda no es el combustible en s\u00ed, sino la <b>diferencia de temperatura<\/b> entre una zona caliente y una zona fr\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>De hecho, en teor\u00eda, un motor Stirling puede funcionar siempre que exista una diferencia de temperatura. Sin embargo, la realidad es bastante diferente.<\/p>\n<p>Durante el proceso, una gran parte de la energ\u00eda t\u00e9rmica se pierde hacia el entorno. Esto est\u00e1 relacionado con la eficiencia de la conversi\u00f3n energ\u00e9tica.<\/p>\n<p>Aqu\u00ed entran en juego dos principios fundamentales de la f\u00edsica:<\/p>\n<p>Por un lado, la ley de conservaci\u00f3n de la energ\u00eda, que establece que la energ\u00eda no puede crearse ni destruirse, solo transformarse.<\/p>\n<p>Por otro, la segunda ley de la termodin\u00e1mica, seg\u00fan la cual el calor fluye de manera natural desde regiones m\u00e1s calientes hacia regiones m\u00e1s fr\u00edas, y parte de la energ\u00eda \u00fatil se pierde inevitablemente durante ese proceso.<\/p>\n<p>El motor Stirling no es una excepci\u00f3n. Gran parte del calor utilizado para calentarlo termina disip\u00e1ndose en la atm\u00f3sfera.<\/p>\n<p>Y aun as\u00ed, la peque\u00f1a fracci\u00f3n de energ\u00eda que logra aprovechar es suficiente para hacer girar el motor a gran velocidad, mover un generador y encender un LED.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfNo resulta impresionante?<\/p>\n<p>Podemos verlo como un sistema con muchas p\u00e9rdidas, pero tambi\u00e9n podemos admirar el hecho de que, incluso despu\u00e9s de tantas p\u00e9rdidas, siga siendo capaz de producir un movimiento tan potente. Ah\u00ed es donde reside gran parte de la belleza y la profundidad de la conversi\u00f3n de energ\u00eda.<\/p>\n<h3>Un motor con aplicaciones mucho m\u00e1s cercanas de lo que imaginas<\/h3>\n<p>Aunque parezca un simple juguete, el motor Stirling tiene aplicaciones reales y muy interesantes.<\/p>\n<p>Por ejemplo, durante a\u00f1os se ha investigado su uso como fuente de energ\u00eda para submarinos. Su funcionamiento silencioso supone una enorme ventaja para veh\u00edculos que necesitan evitar ser detectados.<\/p>\n<p>Adem\u00e1s, tambi\u00e9n se estudia su utilizaci\u00f3n en sistemas de energ\u00eda solar t\u00e9rmica.
