Estas mol\u00e9culas gigantes se forman cuando much\u00edsimas mol\u00e9culas peque\u00f1as se unen entre s\u00ed, como si conect\u00e1ramos cientos de bloques de LEGO.<\/p>\n<p>Existen muchos tipos de pl\u00e1stico. Aqu\u00ed reunimos algunos de los m\u00e1s conocidos que aparecen incluso en los libros de ciencias de secundaria. Esa palabra viene del griego y significa <b>\u201cmuchos\u201d<\/b>. Por ejemplo, \u201cpolietileno\u201d significa literalmente \u201cmuchos etilenos\u201d. Es un nombre perfecto para materiales formados por miles y miles de mol\u00e9culas unidas.<\/p>\n<p>La palabra \u201cpoli\u201d tambi\u00e9n aparece en t\u00e9rminos cotidianos como \u201cpol\u00edgono\u201d o \u201cpolifenoles\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 el pl\u00e1stico es tan importante en nuestra vida?<\/h3>\n<p>Los pl\u00e1sticos tienen propiedades muy \u00fatiles, por eso est\u00e1n presentes pr\u00e1cticamente en todas partes.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fb<b>Son f\u00e1ciles de moldear y procesar.<\/b> Normalmente se ablandan con el calor y se endurecen al enfriarse.<br \/>\n\u30fb<b>Son ligeros.<\/b><br \/>\n\u30fb<b>No se oxidan.<\/b><br \/>\n\u30fb<b>Resisten la descomposici\u00f3n.<\/b><br \/>\n\u30fb<b>No conducen f\u00e1cilmente la electricidad.<\/b><br \/>\n\u30fb<b>Soportan bien los golpes.<\/b><br \/>\n\u30fb<b>Son resistentes a muchos productos qu\u00edmicos.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gracias a todas estas ventajas, el pl\u00e1stico se expandi\u00f3 de forma explosiva durante el siglo XX. Pero su resistencia a descomponerse tambi\u00e9n ha provocado problemas ambientales, como la contaminaci\u00f3n por pl\u00e1sticos en los oc\u00e9anos.<\/p>\n<p>Hoy en d\u00eda, la ciencia busca desarrollar pl\u00e1sticos biodegradables. Curiosamente, tanto la comodidad como los problemas ambientales tienen el mismo origen: las propiedades del propio pl\u00e1stico.<\/p>\n<h3>Las curiosas propiedades del poliestireno (PS)<\/h3>\n<p>El protagonista de este experimento es el <b>poliestireno (PS)<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Este material tiene una caracter\u00edstica muy interesante: <b>cuando se calienta, se vuelve blando y f\u00e1cil de moldear<\/b>. Durante ese proceso, las mol\u00e9culas quedan \u201cforzadas\u201d en una direcci\u00f3n. Cuando se calientan, intentan volver a su estado original y por eso se encogen.<\/p>\n<p>En realidad, m\u00e1s que \u201cencogerse\u201d, cient\u00edficamente ser\u00eda m\u00e1s correcto decir que <b>\u201cregresan a su tama\u00f1o original\u201d<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Gracias a esta propiedad podemos crear llaveros personalizados. Es una actividad perfecta incluso para ni\u00f1os peque\u00f1os y alumnos de primaria, as\u00ed que vale mucho la pena probarla en casa.<\/p>\n<h3>La receta cient\u00edfica<\/h3>\n<p><b>Materiales:<\/b><br \/>\nTostadora, tapa de recipiente de bent\u014d de poliestireno, papel aluminio (o papel de horno) y dos tablas de madera.<\/p>\n<p><b>Procedimiento:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Coloca encima la l\u00e1mina pl\u00e1stica.
