Every day is an experiment.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Have you ever watched dry ice quietly vanish while releasing a mysterious fog? It never turns into liquid\u2014just disappears straight into gas. It almost feels like magic. But hidden inside this \u201cnot-so-ordinary\u201d change are fascinating laws of physics and chemistry. This time, I used leftover dry ice from a cloud chamber radiation experiment to try out a few fun demonstrations.<\/span> <\/p>\n<h3>A Time-Lapse Look at Sublimation<\/h3>\n<p> First, I recorded the sublimation of dry ice using time-lapse photography. I used a 1 kg block and filmed it for three hours\u2014but surprisingly, it didn\u2019t completely disappear! Here\u2019s a 90-second version of that three-hour process.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30a2\u30a4\u30b9\u3092\uff13\u6642\u9593\u653e\u7f6e\uff01\u30bf\u30a4\u30e0\u30e9\u30d7\u30b9\u306b\u3088\u308b\u6607\u83ef\u306e\u69d8\u5b50\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pujiPuJ9WQA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the video, you can see something like <b>white smoke<\/b> forming around the dry ice. This isn\u2019t the dry ice itself turning into visible gas (carbon dioxide). Instead, it\u2019s <b>water vapor in the air cooling and condensing into tiny droplets or ice particles<\/b>. It\u2019s the same reason your breath turns white on a cold winter morning. No liquid appears.<\/p>\n<p>Regular ice changes from <b>solid \u2192 liquid (water) \u2192 gas (water vapor)<\/b>. Dry ice, however, jumps directly from <b>solid \u2192 gas (carbon dioxide)<\/b>, skipping the liquid phase entirely. This process is called <b>sublimation<\/b>. With almost no friction, the object continues moving at a constant speed without any additional force\u2014this is Newton\u2019s First Law (the law of inertia) happening right before your eyes. This happens because the carbon dioxide gas pushing up from below repeatedly lifts and drops them. Around the dry ice, you can also see a white cloud forming. This is caused by water vapor in the air cooling and condensing\u2014<b>exactly the same mechanism that creates real clouds<\/b>. This happens because water transfers heat to the dry ice, accelerating the process. This is the same principle often used in stage performances and movies to create dramatic fog effects.
