Believe it or not, there\u2019s a component in the world of electricity that behaves just like that. It\u2019s called a coil.<\/p>\n<p>The moment you turn a switch on, it resists: \u201cDon\u2019t let the current flow!\u201d<br \/>\nTurn the switch off, and it clings stubbornly: \u201cDon\u2019t stop the current!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll use a modern sensor to uncover the coil\u2019s resistance happening in mere milliseconds\u2014something far too fast for the naked eye to ever catch.<\/p>\n<h3>A Contrary Component? The Mystery of Self-Induction<\/h3>\n<p> When you include a coil in an electric circuit, the current doesn\u2019t instantly jump when you turn the switch on or off. Instead, it changes gradually. This phenomenon is known as self-induction.<\/p>\n<p>When current suddenly flows through a coil, the magnetic field inside it changes rapidly. The coil \u201cdislikes\u201d this abrupt change and generates a reverse electromotive force to counteract it. It\u2019s almost like inertia in the world of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find this in textbooks, but because it happens so quickly, it\u2019s nearly impossible to observe with ordinary ammeters or voltmeters\u2014the needle barely has time to move.<\/p>\n<p>So this time, we used a high-precision sensor, the EasySense V-Hub, to make this fleeting moment visible. The current shoots up almost vertically the moment the switch is turned on.<\/p>\n<p>Now compare that to the red line, which shows the circuit with a coil. The current increases gradually, forming a gentle slope. This is clear evidence that the coil generates a reverse electromotive force, resisting sudden changes\u2014essentially saying, \u201cNo sudden currents allowed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The slight difference in maximum values may come from the coil\u2019s own small resistance (from its copper wire). Encountering these \u201creal-world deviations from theory\u201d is part of what makes experiments so fascinating.<\/p>\n<h3>Going Deeper: The Moment You Turn It Off<\/h3>\n<p> The story doesn\u2019t end when you turn the switch on.
