Para m\u00ed, cada d\u00eda es un experimento.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Apagar las velas del pastel en un d\u00eda especial es uno de esos momentos de pura felicidad. Sin embargo, \u00bfalguna vez te ha pasado que la cera derretida empieza a gotear sobre el pastel y piensas: &#8220;\u00a1Oh, no! \u00a1Con lo bonita que estaba la decoraci\u00f3n!&#8221;? Pues bien, existe un truco infalible para evitar este peque\u00f1o desastre: enfriar las velas. Hoy, desde mi perspectiva como profesor de ciencias, pondremos a prueba este consejo y exploraremos el fascinante mundo cient\u00edfico que se esconde detr\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00bfVelas congeladas? Ponemos a prueba su eficacia<\/h3>\n<p>Dice el mito que &#8220;si enfr\u00edas las velas, la cera gotea menos y duran m\u00e1s&#8221;. Para comprobar si es verdad, realic\u00e9 un experimento con dos velas: una a temperatura ambiente y otra que dej\u00e9 en el congelador durante una hora. Una vez listas, las encend\u00ed al mismo tiempo para observar qu\u00e9 pasaba. En esta ocasi\u00f3n, no hubo diferencia en el tiempo total de duraci\u00f3n. Por lo tanto, aunque el truco no parece hacer que la vela dure m\u00e1s, es una victoria absoluta si lo que quieres es mantener tu pastel impecable.<\/p>\n<p>Para ir un paso m\u00e1s all\u00e1, inclin\u00e9 ambas velas a prop\u00f3sito para ver cu\u00e1l resist\u00eda mejor. Una vez m\u00e1s, la vela a temperatura ambiente derram\u00f3 much\u00edsima m\u00e1s cera. La ciencia detr\u00e1s del truco<\/h3>\n<p>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 algo tan simple como el fr\u00edo marca tanta diferencia? El secreto reside en la parafina, el ingrediente principal de la mayor\u00eda de las velas.<\/p>\n<p>La parafina com\u00fan tiene un punto de fusi\u00f3n (la temperatura a la que se derrite) de unos 60 grados cent\u00edgrados, mientras que su punto de ebullici\u00f3n (cuando se convierte en gas) ronda los 322 grados. Esto significa que, mientras la cera gotea en estado l\u00edquido, su temperatura est\u00e1 en alg\u00fan punto entre esos dos valores.<\/p>\n<p>Aqu\u00ed es donde entra en juego el freno t\u00e9rmico. La cera deja de fluir y se solidifica cuando su temperatura baja de los 60 grados al entrar en contacto con el cuerpo de la vela.<\/p>\n<p>Un congelador dom\u00e9stico suele estar a unos -18 grados. Al enfriar la vela intensamente, el cuerpo de la misma act\u00faa como un refrigerante potente. Cuando la cera derretida intenta resbalar hacia afuera, se topa con una superficie tan fr\u00eda que se solidifica casi al instante. En verano, meter las velas en la nevera junto con el pastel es una estrategia brillante para garantizar una celebraci\u00f3n perfecta.<\/p>\n<h3>La magia de La historia qu\u00edmica de una vela de Faraday<\/h3>\n<p>Cuanto m\u00e1s aprendes sobre una vela, m\u00e1s te cautiva. Es una coreograf\u00eda perfecta entre estados s\u00f3lidos, l\u00edquidos, gaseosos y reacciones qu\u00edmicas.<\/p>\n<h3>Los 4 pasos del baile de la llama<\/h3>\n<p>Fusi\u00f3n (de s\u00f3lido a l\u00edquido)<br \/>\nAl acercar el fuego a la mecha, el calor (energ\u00eda radiante) derrite la parafina s\u00f3lida, creando un peque\u00f1o charco de l\u00edquido en la base de la mecha.<\/p>\n<p>Capilaridad<br \/>\n\u00a1Esta es mi parte favorita! La parafina l\u00edquida asciende por los min\u00fasculos huecos de las fibras de la mecha, desafiando la gravedad. Es el mismo principio que utilizan las plantas para absorber agua por las ra\u00edces.<\/p>\n<p>Vaporizaci\u00f3n (de l\u00edquido a gas)<br \/>\nAl llegar a la parte superior de la mecha y estar expuesta al calor intenso de la llama, la parafina l\u00edquida se transforma en gas.<\/p>\n<p>Combusti\u00f3n<br \/>\nFinalmente, ese gas se mezcla con el ox\u00edgeno del aire y reacciona violentamente, liberando luz y calor. La llama que vemos es, en realidad, el escenario de esta intensa reacci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica.<\/p>\n<p>En una peque\u00f1a vela se concentra toda la esencia de la f\u00edsica y la qu\u00edmica: cambios de estado, transferencia de calor y energ\u00eda.
