The Science of Friction and Heat Revealed with a Mini Thermal Camera

I am Ken Kuwako, your Science Trainer. Every day is an experiment!

Have you ever rubbed your hands together and blown a warm breath on them on a freezing winter morning?

“My hands feel warmer, but am I actually generating heat?”

Let’s look at this simple curiosity through the lens of science. Today, we are going to observe exactly what happens to your palms when you rub them together using a special tool called a thermography camera.

The reason your hands get warm is thanks to a “hidden force” in our physical world: friction. Friction is the force that acts when two surfaces slide against each other. Interestingly, friction has the power to convert the energy of motion into heat. For example, our ancestors started fires by rubbing pieces of wood together. That was a direct application of friction! The same thing happens with your hands. The kinetic energy from your movement is transformed into thermal energy, gently warming up your palms.

This phenomenon is everywhere in our daily lives. When a car slams on its brakes, the tires and brake pads get incredibly hot. Even shooting stars glowing in the night sky are actually bits of space dust rubbing against the atmosphere so violently that they heat up and emit light.

Visualizing Temperature with Thermography

So, how much does the temperature actually rise? I decided to test it using a thermography camera—a device that allows us to see heat as a spectrum of colors.

Before rubbing:

It was 35.1°C.

On the thermography screen, the palms appear blue and purple.
