On a whim, I decided to toss in a coin, and let me tell you—it was way more satisfying than I expected! First, take a look at this video:

Dancing Coins? The Secret Behind the Accelerating Spin

When you drop a coin in, it starts by making wide, slow loops. But as it spirals toward the center, the radius of its path shrinks, and in inverse proportion, its spinning speed ramps up. Watching it reach a blurring velocity before finally vanishing into the hole is strangely addictive.

This is a perfect, visual demonstration of what physicists call the Law of Conservation of Angular Momentum. Have you ever seen a figure skater pull their arms in close to their body to spin faster? That is exactly what’s happening inside this donation box.

A Miniature Universe in a Donation Box

I remember seeing a similar exhibit when I took my students to the Shibuya Planetarium. It turns out this isn’t just a clever piggy bank; it’s a physical model of a gravitational field.

Check out this video, where the red ball in the center represents the Sun:

Thanks to the precisely engineered slope, the objects don’t just tumble straight into the center; they trace beautiful orbital paths.
