El cerezo es un \u00e1rbol de hoja caduca que pertenece a la familia de las Ros\u00e1ceas. De hecho, los \u00e1rboles que nos dan esas deliciosas cerezas que tanto nos gustan son sus parientes cercanos. La corteza joven tiene un brillo especial y presenta unas marcas que parecen l\u00edneas horizontales. Esta caracter\u00edstica, que tambi\u00e9n se ve en \u00e1rboles como los abedules, se llama lenticela. Pero cuidado, no son simples adornos. Son peque\u00f1as aberturas entre las c\u00e9lulas que funcionan como poros respiratorios. Por eso, es com\u00fan ver brotes que nacen directamente de la base o ra\u00edces que aparecen en lugares inesperados. Es fascinante ver c\u00f3mo las hojas, que estaban t\u00edmidamente escondidas durante la plena floraci\u00f3n, brotan de golpe con una energ\u00eda vital incre\u00edble. Si miras la superficie de una hoja, ver\u00e1s finas l\u00edneas entrelazadas como una red. Un simple paseo se vuelve mucho m\u00e1s divertido si juegas a comparar: &#8220;\u00bfEsta planta tendr\u00e1 red o l\u00edneas paralelas?&#8221;. Esto se llama serraci\u00f3n. En el caso del cerezo, lo curioso es que entre los dientes grandes hay otros m\u00e1s peque\u00f1itos. Es extra\u00f1o que una hoja produzca n\u00e9ctar, \u00bfverdad? Pues de aqu\u00ed brota un l\u00edquido dulce. Por pura curiosidad, yo mismo intent\u00e9 probarlo, pero lamentablemente mi lengua no fue capaz de detectar el dulzor (\u00a1si lo intentan, h\u00e1ganlo bajo su propio riesgo y con cuidado higi\u00e9nico!).<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 hay n\u00e9ctar fuera de las flores? Aqu\u00ed se esconde la ingeniosa estrategia del cerezo para contratar guardaespaldas. Para un \u00e1rbol, que las orugas se coman sus hojas es un grave problema. \u00a1As\u00ed que el cerezo ofrece n\u00e9ctar para atraer a las hormigas!<\/p>\n<p>Las hormigas, buscando el dulce banquete, patrullan las hojas. Si encuentran huevos o larvas de polilla en su camino, las ahuyentan o las llevan al hormiguero como alimento.
