El cobre, ese metal tan com\u00fan en el laboratorio, es en realidad un actor de primera capaz de transformaciones dram\u00e1ticas. Hoy les presento el sorprendente drama de la &#8220;oxidaci\u00f3n y reducci\u00f3n&#8221; protagonizado por el ox\u00edgeno y el hidr\u00f3geno.<\/p>\n<h3>Oxidaci\u00f3n: \u00a1El hermoso cobre se vuelve negro!<\/h3>\n<p>Este experimento lo realizaron alumnos en una clase optativa de un colega, y el cambio fue tan vibrante que no pude evitar soltar un grito de asombro.<\/p>\n<p>El m\u00e9todo es muy sencillo. Primero, tomamos una l\u00e1mina de cobre con ese caracter\u00edstico color rojizo brillante (como una moneda de diez yenes) y la calentamos con un mechero Bunsen. De repente, ese brillo precioso desaparece y se convierte en algo totalmente negro. Esto ocurre porque, debido al calor, el cobre se une violentamente con el ox\u00edgeno del aire, transform\u00e1ndose en una sustancia distinta llamada \u00f3xido de cobre (CuO). Pero lo m\u00e1s incre\u00edble es el momento en que retiras el palillo: por un instante se ve un destello m\u00edstico, como un arco\u00edris, y luego vuelve a reaccionar con el ox\u00edgeno del aire para tornarse negro otra vez. Todo se resume en una intensa pelea por el ox\u00edgeno entre las sustancias.<\/p>\n<p>El hidr\u00f3geno y el carbono tienen una &#8220;ambici\u00f3n&#8221; mucho m\u00e1s fuerte que el cobre por unirse al ox\u00edgeno. Cuando se acercan al \u00f3xido de cobre negro, le arrancan el ox\u00edgeno violentamente para convertirse ellos mismos en agua (H\u2082O) o di\u00f3xido de carbono (CO\u2082). As\u00ed, el cobre, libre de ox\u00edgeno, vuelve a ser cobre puro. Al a\u00f1adirle carbono para arrebatarle el ox\u00edgeno (reducirlo), es como finalmente obtenemos el hierro resistente que usamos a gran escala. Desde un peque\u00f1o experimento con cobre hasta las gigantescas plantas sider\u00fargicas, la ciencia est\u00e1 conectada por el mismo hilo.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a1Manos a la obra! Hagamos nuestra propia reducci\u00f3n con carb\u00f3n casero<\/h3>\n<p>En los experimentos escolares solemos usar carb\u00f3n vegetal. Se puede usar polvo de carbono comercial, pero es mucho m\u00e1s divertido fabricar tu propio carb\u00f3n usando palillos de madera. El proceso es f\u00e1cil.<\/p>\n<p>Rompemos los palillos y los metemos sin dejar huecos en una lata de acero. Luego la calentamos con el mechero Bunsen para &#8220;cocinarlos&#8221; al vac\u00edo (pir\u00f3lisis). Como sale humo, es mejor hacerlo en una zona bien ventilada o bajo una campana extractora.
