From our perspective, the child is moving in a perfect circle (circular motion). In the world of physics, for an object to curve instead of moving in a straight line, there must be a constant pull toward the center of the circle. We call this the centripetal force.

In the case of the teacup, the wall of the cup is constantly pushing the child inward. This “push” acts as the centripetal force, keeping the child from flying off and allowing them to keep spinning in a circle. It’s the same principle as swinging a bucket of water over your head without spilling a drop. Your arm is constantly pulling the bucket toward the center, so the water stays put and keeps moving in a circle.

If we look at the fundamental rule of physics, the equation of motion, it looks like this:

ma = f (The change in an object’s motion = The force pulling toward the center)

When we look closer at this formula, we find that the faster you spin, the more centripetal force you need—and it increases by the square of the speed. This means if you double the speed, you need four times the force! That’s why you have to hold on tight when a ride starts picking up serious pace.

The View from the Inside: The Ghostly “Centrifugal Force”

Now, let’s swap perspectives. Imagine you are the one inside the teacup. What do you see? To you, you’re just sitting still while the whole world spins around you. When we were watching from the outside, that outward force didn’t exist! So, what gives? In reality, centrifugal force is a type of inertial force. It’s the same phenomenon you feel when a train suddenly starts and you stumble backward, or when it slams on the brakes and you jerk forward.

Objects have a natural desire to “keep doing what they’re doing.” This is called inertia. When you’re spinning, your body “wants” to go in a straight line, but the ride is forcing you to turn inward. The “centrifugal force” you feel is actually just your body’s reaction to being constantly redirected.

In other words, centrifugal force is a “ghost force”—it only exists for the person moving with the ride.

From your perspective inside the ride, you are stationary. Therefore, you can think of it as the “inward force (centripetal)” and the “outward force (centrifugal)” perfectly balancing each other out.

f (Centripetal Force) = ma (Centrifugal Force)

The fascinating part is that whether you look from the outside (using equations of motion) or from the inside (using balanced forces), the math looks exactly the same. However, the meaning of the equation changes completely depending on where you stand. That’s the beauty and depth of physics!

Centrifugal Force is Amazing! From Washing Machines to Space Stations

Even though it’s a “fictitious force,” centrifugal force is an essential tool in our lives and for future technology.

Washing Machine Spin Cycles 🧺 By spinning the drum at high speeds, strong centrifugal force is generated. The clothes are pressed against the walls, while the water is flung out through the small holes, drying your laundry in minutes.

Salad Spinners 🥗 This works on the exact same principle. It flings the water off your lettuce leaves, giving you a perfectly crisp salad.

Future Space Stations 🛰️ Living in zero-gravity for a long time causes human bones to become brittle. To solve this, scientists are researching ways to rotate giant space stations. The resulting centrifugal force would act as “artificial gravity,” allowing astronauts to walk on the floors just like on Earth. Your favorite park ride might actually be a training ground for life in the stars!

As you can see, centrifugal force is a wonder that appears just by changing your point of view. The next time you’re on a spinning ride, take a moment to feel that mysterious pull and imagine yourself living on a future station in deep space!

https://phys-edu.net/wp/?p=36123

Inquiries and Requests

Bringing the wonder of science closer to you!
