Every day is an experiment.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p>A great tool for class! The &#8220;XXY OSCILLOSCOPE&#8221; web app makes showing waves fun<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re teaching about the nature of sound or the properties of waves in a middle school science class, it can be hard for students to really grasp the concepts. They can hear the sound, but they can&#8217;t see the air vibrating. When you explain longitudinal waves, you often get blank stares. <span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">This is where an oscilloscope comes in handy. But the old, analog oscilloscopes sitting in the physics lab are a hassle\u2014they&#8217;re difficult to use and just plain annoying to get out. It displays sound from the microphone as a waveform in real-time.<\/span> And it&#8217;s surprisingly professional. It can visually show physical quantities like the wave&#8217;s shape, amplitude, and period, making the abstract topic of waves concrete in an instant.<\/p>\n<p>When you use it, you&#8217;ll see students&#8217; eyes light up as they say, &#8220;Whoa, my voice just turned into a wave!&#8221; It&#8217;s truly a &#8220;visualization magic&#8221; of science. It&#8217;s especially perfect for showing how the pitch and loudness of a sound change the waveform.<\/p>\n<p>But it does have one quirk. <span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Sometimes, the app doesn&#8217;t work right away. But don&#8217;t worry\u2014you can almost always get it to work by following these steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What You&#8217;ll Need<br \/>\nAn internet-connected device (PC, tablet, or smartphone\u2014anything works)<\/p>\n<p>A microphone (a built-in one is enough)<\/p>\n<p>A browser (Chrome or Edge are most stable)<\/p>\n<p>Tips for Use<br \/>\nOpen the app<br \/>\n\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/dood.al\/oscilloscope\/\">https:\/\/dood.al\/oscilloscope\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Open the &#8220;Options&#8221; menu on the right.<\/p>\n<p>Turn the &#8220;Sweep&#8221; and &#8220;Microphone&#8221; checkboxes off, and then on again.<br \/>\n\u2192 If you skip this step, the microphone input may not register (this is the quirk).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-43867 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/4041162c0206f4d22fb83b10a90ab5f9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/4041162c0206f4d22fb83b10a90ab5f9.jpg 726w, https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/4041162c0206f4d22fb83b10a90ab5f9-220x300.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Make a sound or say something.<br \/>\n\u2192 The waveform will start moving in real-time!<\/p>\n<p>Sound &#8220;Sensing&#8221; Activities<br \/>\nChange vowels, such as &#8220;ahhh&#8221; and &#8220;eee.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2192 Show students how the wave shapes are different, and talk about how vocal cords work.<\/p>\n<p>Show them the sound of a clap or a desk tap.<br \/>\n\u2192 What does an instantaneous shockwave look like?
