Yet, the foil keeps spinning and spinning. When I first saw this, I remember thinking, &#8220;How is that even moving?&#8221; If you&#8217;re scratching your head right now, you&#8217;re not alone!<\/p>\n<p>Actually, this &#8220;magic&#8221; device is a type of motor that converts electrical energy into motion. Specifically, it\u2019s a modern DIY version of the Faraday Motor, the very first motor ever invented in history. Today, I\u2019ll show you how to build this surprisingly simple motor and explain the scientific principles hidden behind the fun.<\/p>\n<p>The best part? You can find all the materials at a 100-yen shop (or any discount store). No advanced degrees required! By the end of this post, you&#8217;ll understand the &#8220;secret&#8221; behind this trick. Ready to open the door to the world of science?<\/p>\n<h2>The Science Recipe<\/h2>\n<h3>Materials<\/h3>\n<p>Aluminum foil, a battery, a thumbtack, and 5 ferrite magnets.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, you can grab everything at your local dollar store!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"20120402101753\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com\/images\/fotolife\/k\/kkuwako\/20120402\/20120402101753.jpg\" alt=\"20120402101753\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Instructions<\/h3>\n<p>\u2460 Create the Base<\/p>\n<p>Stack five or more ferrite magnets and wrap them neatly in aluminum foil.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" title=\"20120402102313\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com\/images\/fotolife\/k\/kkuwako\/20120402\/20120402102313.jpg\" alt=\"20120402102313\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2461 Create the Rotor<\/p>\n<p>Cut a strip of foil about 5cm wide and fold it in half lengthwise to create a 2.5cm wide strip. Adjust the length so that the two ends of the foil just barely graze the foil-wrapped magnets at the bottom. Watch the video closely to see the exact positioning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>This part is the key!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once you let go, the foil will start spinning on its own.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Does It Spin? The Science of the Faraday Motor<\/h3>\n<p>The secret lies in the relationship between electricity and magnetism. Remember: when an electric current flows through a wire inside a magnetic field, it experiences a force called &#8220;Electromagnetic Force.&#8221; The Faraday Motor uses this very force to create rotation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27364 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/d416db1cf33e5bbd92dce5aa1166e706.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/d416db1cf33e5bbd92dce5aa1166e706.jpg 531w, https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/d416db1cf33e5bbd92dce5aa1166e706-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Breaking Down the Mechanism<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Current:<\/strong> Electricity flows from the positive terminal of the battery, through the foil, and down toward the magnets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Magnetic Field:<\/strong> The magnets at the base create a strong magnetic field (an area of magnetic influence) around the battery.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Force (Electromagnetic Force):<\/strong> The interaction between this current and the magnetic field creates a &#8220;pushing&#8221; force on the foil.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27010 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/skitched-20170225-155901.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/skitched-20170225-155901.jpg 580w, https:\/\/phys-edu.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/skitched-20170225-155901-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We can explain the direction of this spinning force using &#8220;Fleming&#8217;s Left-Hand Rule.&#8221; If you point your middle finger in the direction of the current and your index finger in the direction of the magnetic field, your thumb points to the direction of the force. Because the current flows and the magnetic field is constant, the foil receives a continuous &#8220;nudge&#8221; in one direction, causing it to spin indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>This invention by Michael Faraday is the &#8220;great-grandfather&#8221; of the high-performance motors we use today. Everything from vacuum cleaners and fans to electric trains operates on this same fundamental principle.<\/p>\n<p>This experiment lets you feel the dynamic power of electricity and magnetism without any specialized tools.
